About this deal

When starting out, I used Crayola Air Dry clay for all sorts of projects and it really worked well. Besides using them as the obvious (as ornaments on hanging on your Christmas tree), here are some other ideas for how to use the finished products. You can also consider increasing the airflow around your piece. For example, putting a fan in front of it or turning on a ceiling fan. Flip the piece over after a bit to ensure all areas on the clay pieces are getting air flow. Can you bake air dry clay? Low and behold – I discovered this amazing air dry clay from DAS in both terracotta color and white! I was delighted and couldn’t wait to get started.

Discover the uniqueness of this clay by using moulds or cookie cutters. You can also take advantage of this clay by creating sculptures, with wires and polystyrene shapes to help you structure and pose your creations, smoothing it out with water as you go. Air-dry clay is slightly different than regular oven-baked polymer clay — it's got a fibrous texture and particular handling instructions. For the best results, keep the following tips in mind when crafting with air-dry polymer clay: Any air dry clay will work. If you want a light weight type of clay (great for kids) I recommend the Crayola brand. However, I used the DAS air dry clay since it is more like the type of clay used for pottery and ceramics. It is heavier and more substantial – and lots of fun to work with! Crayola Air Dry Clay also took impressions really well—we did my daughter’s handprint, but that did require more pressure than Playdough or salt dough would.

Air Dry Clay Terra Cotta

This excellent clay has properties that make it perfect for what I needed, but these same properties may not make it for everyone. When dry, it remains somewhat flexible, with the strips being able to bend like a hard rubber eraser. I use the clay to take impressions of small coins and ancient seals for my business, and in this capacity it excels. While the product is still firm, it is not as easily broken as other clays, and does not crumble either. This saves me from having to attempt to make multiple impressions of the same item, as other clays tended to break or crumble when rolled into sheets this thin. This is PERFECT for my purposes, which is using the clay to make detailed impressions of Ancient coins and seals. This requires the clay to be kept in thin strips which are not fragile. When rolled thin, other clays tended to break or crumble very easily, wasting my time, effort, and product .If you have a project where you need to shape the clay into thin strips, this clay will save you a lot of frustration.

We researched the most sought-after air dry clays in their respective categories and discovered that the best options are determined by their type, ingredients, drying time, adjustability, and other special features included by select brands. Regular clay needs to be fired in a kiln or heated in an oven. Air-dry clays dry naturally without being heated. Q: What is the difference between air-dry clay and polymer clay? Quality and durability vary depending on the type and brand of air-dry clay, but the project should largely determine the choice. Consider:

Whoops! We noticed a few errors in your submission:

The oil will evaporate over the course of 1-3 days. Once the scent fades, you can re-apply with whatever essential oil you like. I use and love these essential oils. Some of my favorites to diffuse are Lavender,Frankincense, Joy, Lemon, Thieves, Abundance, and Idaho Blue Spruce. Remember, the sky's the limit — create unique textures and patterns and incorporate mixed media elements where you see fit!

It is very easy to work with, even for beginners. It does not require any special equipment or tools, and it can be shaped and molded with your hands. Don’t you love it when a project turns out better than you envisioned!? I really wanted to find a way to make some terracotta Christmas ornaments since I was throwing some terracotta pots into my decor this year. White clay is also very welcome in my abode.

To top it all off, I used some beautiful French blue chiffon ribbon for my terracotta clay ornaments, and some sweet taupe velvet ribbon for my white ornaments. Press whatever object you're using to make the shape (I used a 1 oz glass jar) into the clay, making sure to go all the way through. Repeat until you've used up all the free space. (Note: I was able to get 18 pendants, but you could get more or less depending on the shapes sizes you're making.) As I mentioned, you can do an additional coat or two of aerosol varnish on top of the paint if you’d like to. But if you’re using a high-quality paint with a built-in sealant, it’s probably overkill. And that’s it! Here are our finished dried, sealed, and painted air clay creations! However, with time I have switched over to using either Sculpey white Air Dry clay or Das White Air Dry Clay. I think for the type of projects I typically do; home decor type projects, these are superior quality brands. Terracotta absorbs allllll the moisture, which can bubble up a paint job. Sealing prevents that from happening. And it gives it a lovely sheen, too. How to seal air dry clay

Sealing your work will not waterproof it. Exposure to water and outdoor elements will have a negative effect on the Air-Dry Clay, so we recommend displaying your sculpture indoors. Air-Dry Clay is similar to a porcelain clay body when wet and can be thrown on a potter’s wheel by intermediate and advanced students. However, it should never be fired in a kiln or painted with traditional glazes. Several thin coats are the key to a smooth, drip-free finish. Treat it like you’d treat spray paint. Globbing it on won’t do a better job, it will just drip and take forever to dry. At Sculpey ®, we love air-dry model clay because it's easy to work with and dries on its own without baking. Our formula is lightweight and smooth with a fibrous composition that makes it perfect for little hands that aren't as strong yet. Because it's able to dry on its own, you can use it to craft even when you don't have access to an oven, like in a classroom or daycare setting. The first step is to create your designs. We did a few pinch pots (super easy for the little ones to get started with), a handprint ornament for my parents, a couple smaller pots, and some balls and “dinosaur eggs” R made. The good news is that epoxy clay is quite solid when it dries, so it’s a good choice for jewelry, ornaments, and other objects that people handle. Depending on the brand, epoxy air-dry clay may be called waterproof because of the strength of the chemical bond, but it’s best to err on the side of caution and put plastic liners inside pottery used as a vase. What to Consider When Choosing the Best Air-Dry Clay While some of the above clay products are made with chemicals, the majority of these options are non-toxic or 100 percent natural for all-age use, come in multiple colors, and dry within 24 hours. Almost all of the above options are suitable for sanding, painting, staining, and rilling after fully drying. FAQs
