About this deal

First of all, this is a very well engineered product - well built and well designed, very strong, very usable. I am very happy I bought it. Often, you will find yourself in need of grabbing something from the trunk. Usually, you would avoid doing it since you will have to unload the bikes first then access the compartment. Atera Strada has developed a unique solution that allows you to open your tailgate without unloading everything.

The first thing I did was to decide the type of cycle carrier, which for me was a no brainer as I had a tow-bar fitted to my RX400.

The new Strada Trail 2 is the perfect way to combine your vehicle, carrier and bike. If you are raring to go, there is nothing to stand in your way. It is extremely robust and is made from both steel and aluminium, this gives it the best of both worlds. The steel means the carrier reinforces where it need to be making it suitable for heavier bikes (up to 30kg each) yet the carrier only weighs 17.9kg so it is easily manoeuvrable. After agonizing over which towbar mounted bike carrier I was going to get to replace my roof mounted system (having bought a 4x4 it's simply that bit too high to be convenient) I finally settled on the Atera Strada DL 3.

Changes in vehicle design are making it less viable to carry cargo on the roof, too. Many SUVs have surprisingly low maximum roof load limits, as do cars with multiple sunroofs, which are becoming popular. And long gone are the days when gutters, or raised roof rails, meant that a set of roof bars would fit most vehicles. Now, when you change your car, a new set of model-specific bars is almost always required. Note for vehicles with a rear mounted spare wheel: You may not be able to fit the STRADA DL to vehicles with a rear mounted spare wheel - you usually need to remove the spare wheel. This will allow you (1) to fit the carrier onto the vehicle (the upright usually hits the spare wheel), (2) to fit all the bikes onto the carrier, (3) to remove the carrier after use (the removal handle usually clashes with a spare wheel). a main base unit comprising the lights, electrics, towball clamp and silver bike rails with ratchet straps. Item No. 022 751 Product information ⟩ | | STRADA VARIO 3 Robust trailer hitch bike carrier for bicycles and especially for e-bikes. The frame is triangular which allows you, when the bikes have been slid out of the way, to stand almost right up against the tow ball. This means you can lift items into and out of the boot both safely and easily. This is not a trivial benefit - most other bike carriers have rectangular frames and although you may be able to open the tailgate easily enough, you usually have to lean across the bike carrier frame to reach the boot space, which is definitely not ergonomic.Probably the best bike towbar carrier available today and far better than Thule and others. No fuss fitting. Not overly heavy. My wife can fit it on the car.

The extra straps supplied with the fourth bar are worth using - seen comment elsewhere suggesting that they're not essential - but they do reduce flex/bounce with 4 bikes on. I'm sure the carrier would cope without, but there's less going on in the rear view mirror with them fitted. The user friendliness and safety of the carrier goes down to the finest details. What’s more, its high load-bearing capacity makes it a versatile piece of equipment. If the carrier is fully loaded, the folding mechanism ensures swift access to the boot. In addition to its high-quality materials and rugged steel-aluminium construction, the Strada Trail 2 features a low dead weight. Note for vehicles with a rear mounted spare wheel: You may not be able to fit the STRADA onto vehicles with a rear mounted spare wheel: in our experience you almost always have to remove the spare wheel. This could be (1) to get the bike carrier onto the vehicle (the upright may hit the spare wheel), (2) to get the bikes to fit on the carrier (the handlebars etc could hit the spare wheel) or (3) take the carrier off the tow bar after use (the handle to remove it could clash with the spare wheel). The width of the Strada is only 100cm and therefore it has a bit of a problem with the largest XL ebikes with 29” wheels and very long wheelbases. We recently tested a Trek Rail XL electric mountain bike for instance, and it could not fit on. Better to search out something like the Thule EasyFold XT 3 which is 123cm wide if you have a very long wheelbase bike. The 63kg weight limit of the Strada DL3 means that it can comfortably carry a couple of electric bikes which typically weigh 20-25kg each. Three ebikes may be a stretch though in terms of both size and weight.
