About this deal

Not very big on celebrity gossip and name dropping stuff, so preferred first book, which was hilarious. But “I know now that I’m not [an alcoholic] and seeing [alcoholism] first-hand, I realise I was nowhere near becoming one.

Nicola Methven, TV Alan in split from husband after 13yrs, Daily Mirror, London, 22 January 2022, page 9. Just the story of how a succession of spirit-sapping jobs made a career in showbusiness look so appealing. Where Brand told of debauched nights of sexual and narcotic misadventures, Carr tells of degreasing car parts on a Northampton industrial estate. E. In his very first book, Alan tells his life story, ('oh and what a life') with his unique twist of natural, observational humour -- 'I'm not saying I'm a fantasist but there have been times when things that I've seen on television when I was younger have tended to seep into my subconscious and blended into my own life. Having read other autobiographies where I found myself laughing out loud frequently, this only happened once or twice during Alan Carr's.When Eddie Izzard was a guest on Chatty Man and asked Carr when he came out of the closet, he replied that he was "never really in" and other children were already making fun of his camp behaviour when he was eight or nine years old. In previous years he has garnered a clutch of awards, from the 2012 National Television Award for Best Talk Show and the 2012 Loaded LAFTA Award for Best Stand-up to the 2010 TV Choice Awards for Best Entertainment Show. After they moved to Northampton, his brother Gary was born, but Carr’s relationship with Christine was firmly established. I'm really only familiar with his show Chatty Man, but the stories about his others shows and gigs were still entertaining. What he struggled with though was the monotony and travel, as much as he found genuine joy in the creativity and performance so you can see why his "act" has transitioned away from predominantly stand-up performance.

If I'd known I could have lived that kind of lifestyle, I would have endured my father's stomach crunches and star jumps.Whereas it had come in the night and left the other boys with chiselled, stubbly chins and deep masculine voices, I'd been left with a huge pair of knockers and the voice of a pensioner. I love Alan Carr, put him on the tele and you are bound to be in stitches, his voice, facial expressions, I could listen to him all day.

As someone who has family with learning difficulties and disabilities, and who works with young people with learning difficulties and disabilities, Alan Carr constantly using people with learning difficulties as the butt of jokes, and using the word r*****ed on several occasions, made me feel a bit sick. It’s surely been to his advantage as a comic that he can emphasise with people living such lives – even if he was determined not to follow that path himself. The most heartfelt and raw parts of this autobiography were the reflections on Alan's childhood - as much as this autobiography was written and narrated with his cheeky tone - and growing up in the shadow of his football manager father. A further reason for allowing smokers to smoke while undergoing counselling is Carr's belief that it is more difficult to convince a smoker to stop until they understand the mechanism of "the nicotine trap".

He always thought he was overweight and his teeth were gappy – although he’s astute enough to know they enhance the caricature, the brand, much like Kenneth Williams’s flaring nostrils. My dad being a football manager, he would take me as a kid to WH Smiths and try to get me to read Match or Score or something like that, but I always just wanted Agatha Christie books! Carr hosted the radio show Going Out with Alan Carr on BBC Radio 2 (2009–2012), as well as releasing his autobiography book Look Who It Is! The idea is that I won’t hear it, but the panto broadcast/whisper only exaggerates the effect, like a page censored with black marker. If you've seen 'The Tooth Fairy Live' then you will recognise some of the anecdotes but it's still funny and what makes it even better is that whilst reading it, you can hear his unique voice in your head.I ask what his parents think of it and he says Christine loves it – although she loves everything he does.
