The iPhone 12 range introduced the smaller, more compact, somewhat nostalgically-sized iPhone 12 mini. And while it featured all of the same specifications as the standard iPhone 12, it came in a size reminiscent of the extremely popular iPhone 8. Supported formats include AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, FLAC, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos Like its bigger sibling, the iPhone 12 Mini supports Dolby Atmos and Apple’s own spatial Audio processing, which you can experience if you own a pair of AirPods Pro or AirPods Max headphones.
One of the big changes design-wise is one you can’t see: MagSafe, a series of magnets inside the rear of the phone, which allow you to connect a variety of accessories such as cases, wireless chargers or a car mount. We found that after just a week of loading our phone with apps and media we were nearing the limit, so it’s likely you’ll need more space if you don’t want to be greeted by the 'storage full' notification at some point. From cameras to battery life, screen size and processing power, the iPhone 12 Pro Max outstrips the iPhone 12 mini in every way – including price. Low-light performance is the main improvement over the last-gen device, according to Apple, largely down to the main camera’s aperture going from f/1.8 on the iPhone 11 to f/1.6 here, and sure enough we found that the camera performed very well in dark settings – you can see an example of this below. Like the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 mini has Dolby Vision included, which means it can record in high dynamic range (HDR) video format. The iPhone 12 mini can record video in 4K at 30fps, which is pretty powerful for such a small device. The biggest change here is the introduction of Dolby Vision HDR, and in our testing we found the quality to be markedly better than that of non-HDR clips we shot, with footage looking more colorful and detailed. It’s a solid upgrade for those who want better video quality, even if on its own it’s not a reason to buy the iPhone 12 mini.
