About this deal

Along with the X24, the entire S10 line represents some of the first phones to feature Wi-Fi 6, thanks to a new Wi-Fi chip from Broadcom. This can be a big deal: Wi-Fi 6, when paired with a Wi-Fi 6-compatible router, will be able to blow through some of the congestion on the popular 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band, offering much clearer connections and better speed in crowded areas. That said, we don't yet have a Wi-Fi 6 router to test this; they'll become more popular as the year goes on. There are premium flagship phones which aren't as eye-wateringly expensive as the Fold, including the Samsung Galaxy S20, Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and LG V50 ThinQ 5G.

We had the opportunity to spend some brief moments in the company of the four Galaxies, and we'll be sharing some early impressions. The Galaxy S10+ is the first US phone with an under-display, ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. It's more accurate than the OnePlus 6T's optical sensor. With a dry finger, if you hit the screen at the right spot, I found it to be 100 percent accurate in testing. But that's the thing —you have to hit the screen at the exact right spot. Hitting it off-center results in rejected touches. There's no visual guideline to do so when the screen is off, and no physical guide (like the ridge of a physical sensor) at all. The sensor is less accurate with a wet finger, and not usable at all with a dirty or goopy finger. For more on this, see my separate story on testing the fingerprint sensor. There's a similar segmentation with display sizes - the S10 5G is the largest at 6.7 inches in diagonal, with screens going down in size in each other of the other three. All of them are Infinity-O displays (punch holes for the front cameras), all of them are Dynamic AMOLED (where'd the 'Super' go?), and all of them are HDR10 capable. Only the Galaxy S10e's panel is flat and of 1080p resolution, the rest have curved edges and 1440p resolution. With the Galaxy S10+, you're definitely getting an object that feels expensive. It's big and made from gorgeous, premium-feeling material. Everything's tight; nothing's cheap (so get a case and protect it). At 6.20 by 2.92 by 0.31 inches (HWD), it's almost exactly the same size as the S9+ (and noticeably narrower than the iPhone XS Max). Yet it has a bigger, taller screen: 6.4 inches at a 19:9 ratio. Looked at in terms of pure area, that's 15.58 square inches, compared with 15.12 on the S9+, 16.08 on the XS Max, and 16.11 on the Galaxy Note 9. The Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus is powerful enough to compete with today’s best gaming phones, and that means it has top-of-the-line specs inside. In the US, it has ships with Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 855 chip, while in most other places around the world it features Samsung’s own Exynos 9820 chip.

As it uses O2, its coverage should be the same, meaning the following 75 places now: Aberdeen, Ashford, Banstead, Basildon, Belfast, Birmingham, Blaydon, Bradford, Bridge of Don, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Chatham, Chesterfield, Coventry, Dartford, Derby, Dewsbury, Dundee, Dyce, Eastbourne, Edinburgh, Esher, Gateshead, Gillingham, Glasgow, Grays, Hemel Hempstead, Huddersfield, Hull, Jarrow, Leeds, Leicester, Lincoln, Lisburn, Liverpool, London, Lowestoft, Luton, Manchester, Mansfield, Middlesbrough, Morley, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Newtownabbey, North Shields, Northampton, Norwich, Nottingham, Orpington, Oxford, Peterborough, Plymouth, Rainham, Redhill, Rotherham, Sheffield, Slough, Staines, South Shields, Stoke-on-Trent, Sunbury, Sunderland, Thundersley, Tynemouth, Warrington, Washington, Weybridge, Windsor, Worthing and York. EE's 5G cities so far are: London, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Birmingham, Belfast, Manchester, Cardiff, Bath, Bristol, Chelmsford, Coventry, Leicester, Liverpool, Oxford, Plymouth, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Lichfield, Lisburn, Newcastle, Nottingham, Salford, Sheffield, Stirling Sunderland, Wakefield and Wolverhampton. Battery is definitely one reason to choose the bigger S10+ over the smaller devices, as the other S10 models have 3,400mAh (S10) and 3,100mAh (S10e) cells. However, EE's 5G coverage does not reach all areas of every city. We've tested it out in London, and found that it's not consistent. In areas where 5G is available though, we're consistently getting speeds of around 200Mbps (versus around 15-20Mbps on 4G devices).
