Sulari Gentill, the author of the delightful Rowland Sinclair books, has penned a fascinating, very meta new mystery that walks the line between impressive literary experiment and gripping murder story.The different style of writing, the way the narratives bounced off each other, the red herrings, the progression of relationships, and the overall arc of the story held me captive within the pages. He suggests she use hoodies to help readers realize Cain is Black and to include masks in her narrative.

Leo has been reading the author’s in-progress novel and provides feedback on each major section that grows progressively creepier. There are enough red herrings and clues to keep the reader guessing throughout the book and although the mystery was the main part of the story I enjoyed the back stories of the four friends being teased out and explored. This is a smart, well-written whodunit with an interesting cast of characters and a well-developed plot. Freddie seizes on this incident as the ideal start for her new opus, which involves “a group of people united by a scream.The mystery element was intriguing and I found myself pleasantly surprised with the way both the stories progressed. Unfortunately, I wasn't engaged in the story at all and I finished it only because I had received an ARC. She’s incorporating some of the writing elements he wanted her to (gore, whodunit cliches) and it’s bad. I found myself frustrated at first with the plot within the plot as I was having a tough time following it.
