Taaia shoves Loki and Tigra out of the way, taking the blast head on while Blue Marvel flies through his head and kills him. Blue Marvel explains to Loki that his being an Anti-Matter reactor killed them because they were wrapped in matter to interface with them. While Taaia feels herself dying, she demands her friends learn what the "Dominion" actually is, and they see a possible way out with Blue Marvel recalling how the Concordance Engines drew power from a "higher" dimension. As Taaia refuses to flee, Blue Marvel signals America they're moving out, but the Beyonder doesn't want them to leave, so Taaia invites him to follow if he chooses. As one of the Omega Council members sees the Beyonder follow and asks if they should follow, another member tells him not to succumb to 'narrative' forces and to let them take the path they chose, leading to the trial by fire. In a white hot space, Taaia flies and a voice speaks life as she nears death. A glowing white figure appeared as Taaia called out in defiance of death, and as the Defenders looked to Taaia, they heard another voice. They see Taaia merge with the Phoenix Force and become its newest host. Doctor Strange: the Magician, reversed. In need of new experiences. Resisting change, or love, or missing something, some vital synchronicity or portent.

If the consistency of this artwork is the price that has to be paid for not having a Defenders ongoing with this creative team, then I can’t even be mad. Every panel is brimming with details; every ink dot shadow, every rippling muscle, every flash of energy, all look incredible in Rodriguez’s own stylized fashion. The Verdict THE FINAL TRIAL OF LOKI! The final trial of Loki, America Chavez and the rest of the Defenders sees them entering…the one and only House of Ideas!

The Anti-All heavily resembles a one-time depiction of the Dragon of the Moon, a similar Beast of the Apocalypse, as a serpentine mass of darkness covered in spines. The Molecule Man is revealed to be the Beyonders' multiversal demolition tool in New Avengers (Vol. 3) #33.

AL EWING : Not so much—there was a plan to explore some of the elements I laid down previously, but that was all taken care of in the first DEFENDERS series, so this is us heading off in a new direction with some old friends. Kind of a road trip. We thought we were only getting the five issues originally, so when people wanted more it was a welcome surprise. But, of course, that means we have to go even bigger.

Tigra encounters the Beyonder in Secret Wars II. The Beyonder threatens to destroy the Multiverse in Secret Wars II #8– 9 (though this issue just says "universe"). Realizing that a "lie" is a "story" told, the "God of Lies" Loki becomes the "God of Stories" in Loki: Agent of Asgard #13. Ewing’s artful weaving and referencing of previous bits of continuity, whether directly connected or disparately scattered, is in full effect here. This is all the more apparent due to the scale of the series, which sees our group facing down conceptual entities from across the universes; without giving the bigger reveals away, the likes of Galactus makes a brief appearance, though his presence is far from the most exciting scene (though it is exciting, more on that later). The Third Cosmos learning about the states of "being" versus "non-being" is a reference to the Lifebringer One and the Anti-All from Defenders (Vol. 6) #5. Karen Charm: It’s too bad about the soup, because I don’t have any silverware on me. Let’s just wait for it to cool down a bit, room temperature should be good, and we can see about using our hands. And as for meeting God, she just lives next door (you can tell from the orange cobblestone walkway). We could go over and see if she wants any soup. Finger-Painting With God

I could belabor the point, but it’s all right there. Al Ewing and Javier Rodríguez are doing something incredibly special here. No matter what editorial or corporate regime comes along later, this is who Loki is. Loki is a character who seemingly changes with each use by a new creative team. What can we expect from this incarnation of the God of Stories? Since Cloud is a being of science, their very nature is out of place in the Fifth Cosmos, rendering them powerless. Mirror Match: Silver Surfer versus Doctor Zota having become Omnimax's herald. Norrin notes that if they'd fought on power alone, he would've actually lost, thanks to Omnimax being older than Galactus, and therefore stronger. But Norrin's been the Surfer for aeons, and knows the Power Cosmic's intricacies better.
