I used the Netgear GS110EMS for more than a week, and the switch worked well. I had no issue with it at all. It was silent though it did get a bit warm during heavy loads -- not to the point I'd be concerned.
The network card in the desktop is Asus XG-C100C. All tests were run from the nas with the desktop acting as an iperf server. For the test the 10G interface is .239, the 1G interface is .198. If the 10G interface was being tested the 1G interface was disabled and vice versa. I used 6FT cat 6 cables into the uplink ports The XS505M and XS508M come with copper Ethernet 5-speed ports that provide either FastEthernet, 1-Gigabit, 2.5-Gigabit, 5-Gigabit or 10-Gigabit connectivity, as well as 1 SFP+ Fiber port with 1-Gigabit or 10-Gigabit connectivity. We really like the extremely small form factor of the Netgear GS110EMX and the fact that there are some very basic features one may want such as setting up port-based VLANs and having prioritized voice VLANs for IP phones. That is great in a small environment. A multitude of mounting options also helps the versatility of this switch. It's worth noting that the switch comes with a 110V-only power adapter. Specifically, the adapter can take power input of up to 120V. This is the first time I've seen an electronic that doesn't support world power output, ranging from 110V to 240V. The Netgear GS110EMX's included power adapter can handle power up to 120V, making it unusable outside America.As for performance number, the switch did very well in my Gigabit test. Clearly, the Multi-Gig uplink played a role. If your goal is complete simplicity, then the Netgear GS110MX makes sense, especially if you want up to 8x 1GbE ports and 2x 10GbE or multi-gigabit ports. For many small offices that have a workstation or server, a NAS, and several clients this type of device makes sense. What would have, of course, made this a stronger recommendation is if the eight ports supported 2.5GbE. Together, they would match the speeds of the uplink ports. We are also seeing more client devices and even low-end NAS units support 2.5GbE so it would make the switch more future proof. This is a very small unit that measures 236x102x27mm or 9.29×4.02×1.06 inches just like its unmanaged counterpart. The front of the switch has ten ports. Ports 1-8 are the 1GbE ports for the switch. These can also operate at 10/100 speeds for those who still utilize ancient network devices. Netgear GS110EMX Port View Front As for a genuine 10Gbps connection, the GS110EMX was fast, but it was farther south of 10,000Mbps than most other switches I've tested -- so far, none could deliver real 10,000Mbps.The point is you will need a new power adapter if you want to use this switch in the EU or Asia and other parts of the world -- or you will fry the hardware. Since I travel a lot, I find Netgear's decision on this front is quite bothersome. FullName First, the two heatsinks are the same as we found in the unmanaged version.
