About this deal

Altra has certainly been making a name for themselves as one of the most popular models for long-distance thru-hiking, so certainly they must be doing something right in the comfort department. is the first mid-sized shoe where I actually felt the ankle support was doing its job and doing it well. Altra did add a TPU heel counter for additional structure, but the rest of the design is fairly compromised. Based on The Trek’s own “ By the Numbers” series, in 2014 on the Appalachian Trail Altra boots made up only 4% of all shoes hikers used.

With a running shoe-inspired design, over-the-ankle construction, and similarly polarizing looks, the two shoes share a lot in common. The laces can be cinched down for a secure fit, which acts as much as a reminder not to roll your ankle as anything else. Next up is the Breeze LT Mid GTX, a popular lightweight design from hiking footwear specialist Vasque. ounces, although this translates to a sizable increase in both support and durability—two areas where the Altra fell noticeably short.Granted, the rocky flanks of Mount Sneffels were pretty aggressive testing grounds, but the Lone Peak doesn’t strike me as a particularly long-lasting or hardwearing design. The boots are wide so there is a lot of surface area contact, but the wide fit also keeps them from edging effectively and we did not feel confident while boulder hopping in off-trail talus or when carrying heavy loads.

My Altra Lone Peak Review evalates the support, weight, fit, comfort, traction, weather protection, durability, and value of Altra's best-selling trail running shoe. Neoshell Mid is available in both men’s and women’s sizes with minimal design aspects tailored to properly fit our differing body types.

Many users have reported durability issues with these boots and feel that they do not last particularly long before materials begin delaminating. The momentum in hiking footwear is moving away from bulky boots toward lightweight shoes and even trail runners that are faster and more comfortable. The upper material is soft and flexible on its own, giving credence to the concept that compression equals rigidity. They endured miles on sandy beaches, snow-capped mountains, and arid foothills in southern California as well as the damp, rainy October weather surrounding Scotland’s 96 mile West Highland Way (WHW).

Altra Lone Peak ALL-WTHR Mid Review | Tested by GearLab

for the women’s version), features Gore-Tex waterproofing rather than eVent, and gets the edge in traction with a superior tread design and grippier rubber (particularly on rock). We find that it offers good waterproofness in wet weather, and keeps snow and mud out (but that we are not as stoked for the snow and mud due to some traction limitations).

Their signature Zero-Drop platform and incredibly spacious toe boxes have gained increasing popularity in both running and hiking communities alike. Obviously they will not stack up well against a rugged mountain boot made from full-grain leather, but on their own, are they stable? For the weight and comfort, as well as the high-tech waterproof fabrics, these boots are a good value. I tested the ALL-WTHR Mid for this review, which is the waterproof, mid-height offering in Altra’s Lone Peak collection. At this point, my Altra Lone Peak review should have given you a pretty good idea if the Altra Lone Peak is the right kind of trail running shoe for your hikes—or not.
