About this deal

Best for: Scrapbooking, storyboarding, botanical illustration, fashion illustration, map illustration, children’s book illustration

Unlike most other types of pens, fine liners are waterproof, which prevents smudges and bleeding. The best ones also contain water-resistant ink to avoid smears. In addition, a big perk of these art pens is that they can be used on light and dark paper surfaces — you can find a complete white ink gel Sakura set in our additional suggestions below. If you’re a longtime sketcher, you’ll know that fountain pens make for some of the best art pens for creative work besides writing. They allow you to create bolder, more fluid linework than that achieved with a fineliner or ballpoint pen. The colors in this set are also superior quality, with tones ranging from deep, dark colors to vibrant neon hues. Know that these art pens may bleed a little, depending on the surface. I advise testing them on different types of paper before applying them to your final project. For this test we are looking at how well the fineliners work with inks. I am using two types of ink for this test. The first test is the fineliners with Winsor & Newton Drawing Inks. This is a shellac dye-based ink. I am using canary yellow ink in this experiment.

I love sketching live and whilst it can be one of the most challenging disciplines, it can be the one of the most rewarding. A lot of people use photographs to draw from in the studio, but I think the finished artwork betrays the source material and a photography reference is sometimes too perfect. They feature an ergonomic triangular body, which provides a comfortable grip and reduces muscle strain. Pens also have water-based ink that’s easy to wash off, making them an excellent choice for kids too. Are you or your children fans of the mandala trend? Then in addition to coloured pencils, why not try colouring with our fineliners? Benefit from this special feature: The Staedtler Pigment Liner is winning here, with 11 different nib sizes available. It comes in a broad 1.2 nib as well as an excellent selection of smaller sizes. The Uni-Pin and Pigma Micron Fineliners have the smallest nib size at 0.03. It gives you good precision, but you do have to be careful not to press too hard as it is very delicate. I’ve found the 0.1 nib size holds up much better over time. It has been a great experience looking at all these fineliner pens in such detail. My favourite is still the Uni-Pin Fineliner, but I am a creature of habit. It just seems to be the best value for money, comes in a great range of nib sizes, has a decent colour selection for sketching and the nib is very hard-wearing. The pigment ink is waterproof and relatively smudge proof, but not great for Watercolours. Thanks to their fine tip, excellent writing results can be achieved with fineliners. The ink dries super-fast, so there is no danger of smudging. Fineliners are increasingly being used in the creative industry. For example, the STAEDTLER pigment liner is a popular choice for sketching, drawing and writing. It is available in a special set containing three assorted line widths and two metallic markers specifically designed with handlettering in mind. You can use this set to remind the favourite people in your life just how much they mean to you. From the heart and, above all, by hand:

What's the difference between a ballpoint pen and a rollerball pen? Our Top 10 Best Pens for Drawing If you’re nervous about putting pen to paper try planning your drawing with pencil first. This planning will help you work out where your lines need to be placed, without worrying too much about making mistakes. Many people enjoy writing with a fineliner pen as it offers a thin, crisp line of cursive and a unique feel. Want to go all out? Then Coptic fineliner pens are your answer. Copic products are lavish and expensive but worth every penny if you’re after top-of-the-line art pens and supplies.

And while the Skyscape Tones set featured above is my favorite, there are many other colors and themes to choose from under this line: Green Tones, Landscape Tones, Pastel Tones, and Neutral Tones, to name a few. Whilst I am more than happy to draw from a photograph on specific commissions for example, it’s impossible to beat a sketch created live in situ – somehow there is more soul to the finished piece.

To choose to sketch with a fineliner pen is to decide to accept your mistakes as you make them and move on. Both inks produced similar results for this test. All the fineliners resisted smudging quite well apart from the Stabilo Point 88 Fineliner. Again, with it being water-based, this was expected. I did notice some small smudging from the Winsor & Newton Fineliner when used with the Drawing Inks, especially on cross hatched marks, but it performed fine with the Acrylic Inks. I also tested the fineliners on top of the ink once dry. All pens worked well, but the Stabilo Point 88 seemed much more faded. Try mixing up different techniques to help define the form of the object you are sketching. Cross hatching and contour are commonly used together. Keep in mind that rollerball pens use heavier water-based ink and, therefore, will take a while to dry. This also means they’re prone to smudging — so not the best art pens for left-handers!
