a b c Kraft, David Anthony; Salicup, Jim (April 1983). "Frank Miller's Ronin". Comics Interview. No.2. Fictioneer Books. pp.7–21. Gavaler, Chris (2017). Superhero Comics. London and New York: Bloomsbury Academic. pp.279–280. ISBN 978-1-4742-2635-6. Author Appeal: This is basically Frank Miller's love letter to manga/anime both past and (at the time) present. We see elements of everything from Lone Wolf and Cub to AKIRA. Superman #400: "The Living Legends of Superman" (a, with Elliot S. Maggin, among other artists, 1984) Miller is noted for combining film noir and manga influences in his comic art creations. He said: "I realized when I started Sin City that I found American and English comics be too wordy, too constipated, and Japanese comics to be too empty. So I was attempting to do a hybrid." [3] Miller has received every major comic book industry award, and in 2015 he was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame.

Mithra, Kuljit (1997). "Interview With Walt Simonson". ManWithoutFear.com. Archived from the original on March 21, 2013 . Retrieved March 17, 2013. The gist of it is that by the time Marvel was interested in having us work on the story, Frank was off doing Dark Knight and I was off doing X-Factor. So it never happened. Too bad—it was a cool story too. Schedeen, Jesse (December 14, 2015). " The Dark Knight III #1 Dominates November's Comic Book Sales". IGN. At Marvel, Miller settled in as a regular fill-in and cover artist, working on a variety of titles. One of these jobs was drawing Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #27–28 (February–March 1979), which guest-starred Daredevil. [16] At the time, sales of the Daredevil title were poor but Miller saw potential in "a blind protagonist in a purely visual medium", as he recalled in 2000. [17] Miller went to writer and staffer Jo Duffy (a mentor-figure whom he called his "guardian angel" at Marvel) [17] and she passed on his interest to editor-in-chief Jim Shooter to get Miller work on Daredevil's regular title. Shooter agreed and made Miller the new penciller on the title. As Miller recalled in 2008: Gainax Ending: Virgo is destroyed, possibly damning the entire human race. Casey certainly has little to no protection in the harsh New York environment and then Ronin comes marching through the flames. Not only is the Ronin identity supposed to be dead but Billy's fate certainly seemed sealed as well since he committed seppuku and was left in an exploding building. Not only that, with Virgo gone, who is controlling him? His blank stare at Casey doesn't make things seem any better. The end.Hillhouse, Jason (writer) (2005). Legends of the Dark Knight: The History of Batman. New Wave Entertainment. Archived from the original (DVD) on October 31, 2014 . Retrieved October 9, 2013. That other series could be another of FMP’s brand-new creations, Pandora, whose release date is still undetermined. Miller devised the idea for the science-fiction/fantasy hybrid. “Star Trek: Discovery” writers Anthony Maranville and Chris Silvestri will script that series, with Emma Kubert, daughter of comics superstar (and The Dark Knight III: The Master Race artist) Andy Kubert, being the latest member of her esteemed family to handle the artwork on a Frank Miller project. Ronin is a real headscratcher for me. There are things I genuinely like about it; some of the art given Varley's style is beautiful and aspects of the story and themes are interesting and hit my switches. The plot feels like the sort of thing that is better to just roll with than to ask actual deeper questions but that doesn't diminish it for me. But at the same time, the artwork can look real grotty, the characters outside of Casey are forgettable and the ending is a slap in the face. Three stars is what I give it, but that doesn't even convey the confusion I feel about this title.

Frank Miller Presents: Why the Acclaimed Comic Book - IGN

In response to claims that his comics are conservative, Miller said, "I'm not a conservative. I'm a libertarian." [106] Style and influence [ edit ] Marv walking through the rain in The Hard Goodbye cover by Frank Miller, illustrating Miller's film noir-influenced visual style Miller was born in Olney, Maryland, on January 27, 1957, [4] [5] and raised in Montpelier, Vermont, [4] the fifth of seven children of a nurse mother and a carpenter/electrician father. [6] His family was Irish Catholic. [7] Career [ edit ] Ronin initially takes place in Feudal Japan where a samurai's master is murdered by the demon Agat. The unnamed Ronin goes on a crusade to avenge his master and in the process, sacrifices himself. Cut to 800 years later and we are in the blasted ruins of New York in a massive complex run by the Aquarius Corporation. It's here we are introduced to a small cast of characters including: Miller was widely criticized after the comic’s release for his misinformed and highly offensive portrayal of Muslims, and with good reason: Islam is depicted throughout “Holy Terror” as primitive and archaic, and its followers are treated with undisguised contempt. No distinction is made between Al-Qaeda and the 1.6 billion Muslims living peacefully worldwide -- to Miller, they’re all just maniacal lunatics named Mohammed who scream “Jihad!” a lot before blowing stuff up. That’s not only a profoundly messed-up worldview, but a weak basis for a cohesive and well-developed narrative. No wonder it was so unpopular! Mithra, Kuljit (February 1998). A.I. Is a Crapshoot: What's left of civilized New York is run by an AI computer. It doesn't turn out well. Goldstein, Hilary (March 16, 2005). "Sin City: From Panel to Screen". IGN . Retrieved April 1, 2015. Meanwhile, by unknown means, the ancient Japanese sword is discovered, releasing Agat and the ronin. They continue their blood feud throughout Aquarius and across the wastelands of New York. Casey looks into the matter, eventually discovering the truth behind it all. I can honestly say my jaw was gaping for the entire sequence, all the way from the moment when I realized he was going to carry the device out, step by step, to the end.
