About this deal

MAKES ROOTS GROW STRONGER – Stronger and deeper root systems result in better plant growth, better crops and healthier and improved soils. Blood and bone is suitable for all plants in the garden. Its slow-release properties mean it won’t harm or burn plants unless applied in excess.

Most vegetarian and vegan fertilisers have an NPK ratio that is much lower than Growmore. Organic fertilisers release their nutrients more slowly as they are broken down by bacteria in the soil. However, chemical fertilisers like Growmore are faster acting than organic fertilisers, making them a better choice if plants are low in nutrients and need treating urgently. There are three general types of fertilisers: mineral fertilisers produced from mined minerals such as phosphorous and potash; organic fertilisers made from organic materials such as bone or leaves, and industrial fertilisers, which are made by chemicalStraight fertilisers: These contain only one or mainly one nutrient. They are usually used to provide different nutrients at different times of the year, or to correct particular nutrient deficiencies. They are usually inorganic. Bone meal is especially high in phosphorus and calcium, but not much else. During fruiting, bone meal should be applied as a preventative measure or treatment for calcium-related deficiencies, or if you notice the onset of bud rot or bud drop in any plant. Finally, bone meal’s organic matter naturally encourages the improvement of micro-organisms which can help improve the soil’s fertility and structure. When using before planting or sowing apply Blood Fish & Bone at 140g/m² and lightly fork or rake into the soil. When using this product as a top dressing apply at 70g/m² and lightly fork into the soil.

It’s easy for plants to absorb and take up, and is slow-release to benefit plants for months at a time. Blood and bone is a good slow-release fertiliser, but should not be used as a sole replacement of other organic products as it is not an all round balanced fertiliser. Similarly to fish, blood and bone, it is useful for tomatoes and peppers to prevent diseases related to calcium deficiency like blossom end rot. How is Blood and Bone Different from Fish, Blood and Bone? Method one: Each year, use a potassium-rich general fertiliser (rose fertiliser for example) in late winter as directed by the manufacturer.Apples and young pear treesneed nitrogen fertiliser annually, with culinary apples requiring more nitrogen than dessert varieties. To put this theory into practice, simply choose any one of the methods below. And, for dessert apples, apply an additional 25g per sq m (¾oz per sq yd) of sulphate of potash every three years. Here are 6 reasons why you should try fish, blood and bone fertiliser: 1) Gradual-Release but Not Slow-Release There are no plants that shouldn’t be given blood and bone for health reasons, but for any non-flowering plant, evergreen shrubs, or short-lived annuals, you will very much be wasting your money.

One frequently used replacement for blood, fish and bone fertiliser is Growmore. This is a chemical fertiliser first invented during World War Two that provides equal amounts of all three main nutrients. However, blood, fish and bone is more preferable to Growmore due to its slower release of nutrients, allowing plants to take them up more efficiently. Growmore stays in the soil for only seven to 10 days, while blood, fish and bone fertiliser lasts for between four and six weeks. How do veggie and vegan fertilisers compare?

These fruits need a balanced general fertiliser in early spring. As a result, sprinkle Growmore around the root zone at the rate of 140g per sq m (4oz per sq yd) My pet hate is liquid fertilisers that are so strong, they burn the foliage or, worse, get washed away as soon as it rains. Method two: Each year, use Growmore fertiliser. Apply 100g per sq m (3oz per sq yd) for dessert apples in bare soil and 140g per sq m (4oz per sq yd) for dessert apples in grass. For cooking apples, use 50 percent more.
