About this deal

Katy specifically appealed to me as a young reader because she is a writer of stories to entertain her family. She keeps the episodes of her latest on-going story hidden in strange places all over the house. Katy is depicted as being extremely active and a leader. She creates games that lead her school mates, on one occasion, and her friends and siblings, on another occasion, into trouble. Katy also has a big heart and is always finding new and rather unsuitable friends whom she embraces with great passion and enthusiasm. Katy will do anything for her friends, even if it gets her into trouble.

Well, this is mighty awkward. You all know of one of those books you adored as a child but reread as a feminist adult and see things from an entirely different perspective? What Katy Did was one of those books. The novel has 26 chapters, in two sections, so is an absorbing read for this age. It starts out explaining about the six children of Dr. Carr, or “Papa”, who live in a fictional little lakeside town of Burnet in Ohio, in the 1860s. Katy is the eldest at twelve years of age, and a tall untidy tomboy. The children’s mother, Mrs Carr is dead, and Katy only has faint memories of her. The children’s Aunt Izzie now lives with them. She is kind, and does her best to look after the children, but she is old-fashioned and rather strict:Keluarga Carr merawat si kecil Amy sementara ibunya, Mrs Ashe merawat ponakan kecilnya yg sakit. Setelah sang ponakan pergi, Mrs Ashe merasa ingin ganti suasana. Dia mengajak Katy yg sudah berusia 21 thn ikut jalan-jalan bersamanya dan Amy ke Eropa selama setahun! Dr Carr setuju setelah melalui banyak pertimbangan.

Eight year old Elsie Carr doesn't want to play with the little ones she longs to do everything with her two older sisters Katy and Clover. What Katy Did Next starts with a good deed – Katy notices that little Amy cannot go home because her cousin is down with scarlet fever. Of course, she and the rest of the family take the little girl in and by the end of the stay, Amy is so fond of Katy that it inspires her mother, Mrs Ashe, to invite Katy to travel with them to Europe.

CHAPTER II.

At the beginning we have the traditional flurry of presents from the Carr family as holiday gifts and even a visit to Rose Red in Boston who now has a husband and her own little Rose Bud! This was very much in keeping with the tone and feeling of the last two books. The plot was lovely, with an unusual climax but quite a fascinating one. I admire how Coolidge kept this book so quiet and slow-paced—it was a very relaxing read. The romance is one of the sweetest ever, and I absolutely love it. There were no overt themes or messages, but I found a host of good reminders on being a polite, kind, and active person… and the hints on romance were so good.

A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘How delicious!’ cried Clover, skipping about and clapping her hands: ‘I never, never, never did hear of anything so perfectly lovely. Papa, when are you coming down stairs? I want to speak to you dreadfully.’ Woolsey was born January 29, 1835, into the wealthy, influential New England Dwight family in Cleveland, Ohio. Her father was John Mumford Woolsey (1796–1870) and mother was Jane Andrews. She spent much of her childhood in New Haven Connecticut after her family moved there in 1852. Imogen Clark: a classmate of Katy and Clover; a silly, affected girl. Initially she enthralls Katy with her romantic imagination, but she proves dishonest and self-centered and, as her father predicted, Katy grows disillusioned with her. Both Father and Cousin Helen impart such valuable thoughts on life's lessons, and the story is told in such a way as to be wonderfully engaging and powerfully impacting. I can't recommend this enough! Most importantly, the book awakens a sense of gratitude in the reader towards God even for the smallest of blessings. We tend to underestimate some of our blessings, until God takes them away from us. This is when we realize where we went wrong. year-old Katy Carr lives with her widowed father and her two brothers and three sisters in Burnet, a small Midwestern American town. Her father is a very busy doctor who works long hours; the children are mostly in the care of his sister Aunt Izzie, who is very particular and something of a scold. Bright, headstrong Katy can hardly avoid getting into mischief almost daily under these circumstances, but she is unfailingly remorseful afterward. She behaves somewhat kindly to the children and dreams of some day doing something "grand" with her life: painting famous pictures, saving the lives of drowning people, or leading a crusade on a white horse. She also wants to be "beautiful, of course, and good if I can." When her mother died four years earlier, she hoped Katy would be a little mother to her siblings: in practice, she is the kind of big sister who is sometimes impatient and cross with them but leads them into all sorts of exciting adventures. In 2015, author Jacqueline Wilson wrote her novel Katy, which is a modern retelling of What Katy Did; in 2018, the Wilson novel was adapted into the CBBC TV series Katy. The August 2016 edition of Storytime featured a new illustrated adaptation with illustrations by Italian artist Marco Guadalupi. Even some people who aren't really familiar with this one recognise it as the one where she gets a marriage proposal on a gondola in Venice. And cover designers understandably make the most of that. Set in America, England, France, and Italy during the 1870s, this story is a lovely mix of adventure & slice-of-life. The writing style is just gorgeous, as always with Susan Coolidge. The descriptions of Europe were so well done that I felt as if I was traveling along with Katy. I was delighted with the bookish perspective, especially in England! There are beautiful descriptions of nature & people & places and such excellent humour…
