About this deal

Born in 1940, Annie Ernaux grew up in Normandy, studied at Rouen University, and later taught at secondary school.

Annie Ernaux climbed up the social ladder and landed in the academic middle-class world through school. Narrating his slow ascent towards material comfort, Ernaux’s cold observation in A Man’s Place reveals the shame that haunted her father throughout his life. In exchange he was given a place to sleep, free meals, some pocket money, and they did his laundry for him. What Ernaux does particularly well is to capture the class struggle within French society as she looks at her father and how he reacts to the people around him. His lack of proper education affected his confidence and caused a lot of friction in his relationship with his daughter (author).

I think he was proud of Annie as she went through college, but apparently he was sort of jealous of her at times and she was ashamed of him at times.

It’s like reliving memories as you do with old suppressed memories, sometimes to re-imagine them, sometimes to get away with them. Ultimately the book serves as a snapshot of rural France (particularly the Normandy region), highlighting the various changes taking place in the first half of the 20th century, while also providing a window into Ernaux's relationship with her father, and therefore into the author herself. I read this one when the French was just a little bit too hard, so it was a lot of work, but worthwhile.

Ernaux could only achieve this through a State scholarship she had received, but his pride led them to keep those details quiet.

These two authors do so much with deceptively simple language that it takes a skilled translator to capture and reflect that clever simplicity.

In the course of the aforementioned interview with The Guardian to celebrate the release of I Remain In Darkness , she says: “It’s the work of a novelist to tell the truth. My father was taken out of school to work on his parent’s land at age 8; however, he lived at home until he married my mother.
