About this deal

Each victory card has two agendas. Once you’ve achieved one, place a victory token on that agenda. It doesn’t matter if later in the game you no longer meet the criteria for that agenda. Once your token is on the card, it cannot be removed. There are five districts that you can choose from, and each one boosts your civilization in a unique way, provided you’re able to place it near the right terrain. A campus will enhance your scientific endeavors, a commercial hub can support your economy, while an encampment could defeat rival armies and barbarians or reinforce your defenses. An industrial zone can build cities or support your industry focus card and a theater square extends your control over more and more of the map.

I dislike expansions that throw the base game out the window. Not this time. Read our review of Civilization: A New Dawn – Terra Incognita. At the start of each game, players draw a random leader card that they will embody for the duration of the game. Each leader comes with a unique focus bar setup to align with their nation’s historical pursuits, as well as a special ability to give them an edge other players won't have. Each player also receives a set of cities, caravans, control tokens, diplomacy cards, focus cards, and a tech dial. For me, there are a few gripes which become apparent once you have a few games under your belt. Resource tokens are used within the game to buy some bits, but it feels considerably restricted in this area and so it can feel slightly redundant at times as there only really spent on wonders. I’d liked to have seen more emphasis on trade as well, and being able to upgrade focus areas on a slightly more detailed level, rather then just changing a card for a slightly better one.

WE SAY

If these advantages aren’t enough to present a worthy match for your finely-honed civilization-building skills, one of the other five difficulty settings included in the rules allow you to adjust the AP to the level of challenge you are looking for. If you can best the AP on Empress difficulty, you will have etched your name into the annals of history! You will have to invest in every part of your civilization, including the economy, your citizens, and naturally – the military. The game is card-driven and you will leverage your cards to trade resources, subjugate foreign lands, and not least, score victory points! For those who have been longer in the hobby, the game’s core gameplay is based on the 51st State game.

These activities all have the aim of completing a certain number of objectives. Each game is randomized with three objective cards, each of which has two objectives. A player who completes one objective on each of the three cards wins the game. Caravans can move around the map to enhance a civilization’s actions by generating trade tokens and diplomacy with city-states and rival players. Game Experience: A big pull for A New Dawn is the player action system. You have five terrain slots with a focus card under each, ranging from the first slot as the weakest to the fifth being strongest. You select an action from a focus card in front of you and once it’s played, that card is moved into the first slot and the rest are shuffled up one place. Each player's tech dial is put to zero and a capital city is placed on a free star space nearest to each player to act as base camp. City state cards relating to the ones that are in play are put nearby and finally three victory cards are laid out and the game can begin. It occurred to me that the focus row in Civilization: A New Dawn is perfect for operating a programmed opponent, and thus, the idea for the Automated Player was born! So I've got the opportunity to either get A New Dawn and sell the older Civilization game or keep the older and get another game I'm keen on. I've never played the 2010 edition as I've got two toddlers and the thought of a three hour game with my wife might be a bit hard. We can normally manage up to two hours twice a week for boardgaming, after they're in bed. There are some plastic miniatures included representing the various cities that will crop up throughout the game, which is a nice touch, bringing a 3D element to the board. I suppose they could have made them individual from one another but considering they don’t really bother to do so in the digital version it was not to be expected. You’ll also find some plastic caravans. After you place a control token on a mountain space, you may place a control token on a space adjacent to that space (which can trigger the effect again). Science - Move the pointer on your Tech Dial a number of spaces equivalent to the numerical value of the slot the Science card is in when played. By moving the Tech Dial, you can gain access to more powerful versions of the Focus Cards. Straight out of the box, the components and artwork stays true to Sid Meier with that old school feel but with fresh revamps in places. With a mixture of plastic tokens as well as cardboard ones, it’s a nice balance and looks pleasing once set-up. Be warned though, invest in some plastic grip seal bags to keep the tokens separate as only a few are provided in the box and it helps with faster setup times. Cyclades is a game of bluffing, skillful manoeuvring and securing favor from all high. Don’t you worry out about missing on some deity’s predisposition, though, as you have plenty of Greek gods and goddesses to choose from who, frankly, have little better to do than meddle in human affairs.

Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery is a worthy way to wrap up this list. This civilization board game enjoyed critical acclaim and was reviewed more than 10,000 times on BoardGameGeek, not least owing to the popularity of the video game franchise.
