About this deal

As can be seen in the dial control image above, this lens can create a very strong blur at 35mm if the subject is close and the aperture is wide. The total light has nothing to do with the exposure, it's the intensity of light (light per unit area) at the sensor that matters (right?). A smaller sensor doesn't mean you need a higher ISO to shoot at the same equivalent exposure. If that were the case the center of a FF would be 1 stop darker than the rest by the above logic.

While landscape photography does not so-frequently need the f/1.8 aperture advantage this lens holds, the right weather conditions Based on these new lines, we have developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus. While this lens is designed to cover only an APS-C-sized camera sensor, this lens mounts and functions on a full frame DSLR. Similar arguments apply for low light, high ISO shooting; the F1.8 zoom allows you to shoot handheld at lower ISOs for better image quality, and in principle should come close to matching a full frame camera with an F2.8 zoom in terms of overall image noise. But there are lots of complicating factors here, including the existence of image-stabilized F2.8 zooms that allow you to hand-hold at slow shutter speeds and use even lower ISOs, just as long as your subject isn't moving. (Sony and Pentax users, of course, benefit from image stabilization with all lenses.) Video Autofocus At 18mm full-aperture sharpness is excellent from corner to corner, though sharpness in the outer field drops slightly through the zoom range to 35mm. For most focal lengths and apertures, though the sharpness differs by 5% or less across the frame.Another factor making the relatively short focal length range more palatable is the image quality this lens delivers. Sharpness is slightly better at the wide end than the long end, but f/1.8 real life images from both ends look good. Note 05/18/2021 — an earlier version of this review incorrectly assumed f/1.8 on this lens was equal to f/1.8 full frame. This mistake has been corrected.) Variable focal lengths The 18-35mm focal length is rather wide angle for most sports needs, but this lens certainly can be used for the narrow niche of athletic activities these focal length work for. Coma ( saggital coma flare) often causes weird smeared blobs to appear around bright points of light in the corners of fast or wide lenses at large apertures. In lenses that have it, coma goes away as stopped down.

The f/1.8 aperture reduces the need for OS in scenarios where the reduced depth of field work is acceptable (or preferred). Optically this lens is extraordinary —but it's too big and heavy, has a silly zoom range, and I have little confidence that this lens will work with whatever camera I'm using ten years from now. When I invest in pro lenses from Canon, LEICA and Nikon, I know they'll still be performing decades from now. All my Canon, LEICA and Nikon lenses from 25 years ago still work perfectly today, while I have older Sigma lenses that work on cameras of their vintage, but not on today's cameras. Likewise, my repairman has had too much experience with 7-year old Sigma lenses for which parts aren't available, making those expensive Sigma lenses into paperweights, while the pro brands are easy to service. And that’s the confusing thing about “4K Crop” video on the R5, for when an APS-C lens like the Sigma is attached, it may appear the R5 is shooting in regular 4K because 4K HQ mode is disabled. But it’s not. Behind the scenes, with Movie Cropping enabled, the R5 is oversampling 5.1K when shooting 4K. Close-up image quality isn't bad either, at least when stopped down a bit. The image is soft wide open, but sharpens up pretty well in the centre at F2.8. The corners rather lag behind, but continue to improve on stopping down until our flat test chart shot looks sharp corner-to-corner at F11. There's minimal distortion, and only the slightest hint of blue/yellow chromatic aberration. Colour balance

Unlike a prime lens with a single focal length, the Sigma is variable. You may zoom in-and-out without physically moving your camera setup. This offers greater flexibility, speed and creative control when composing a shot — especially when mounted on a tripod. I have not tested this on Canon, which would not be able to correct it without a lens profile, which does not exist. The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 is an affordable lens with fantastic “Sigma Art” image quality, sharpness, and performance when shooting video on the Canon EOS R5. Its large aperture is well suited for shooting video in low light environments, its “35mm effective” 27-52mm focal length is just right, and you may capture high quality 4K video without overheating.

Sigma also clarifies that any DC lenses where the image circle is made to match APS-C sensors is used, the EOS R won't automatically switch to its built-in 1.6x crop shooting mode, meaning it will have to be set manually. A future firmware update, expected to be 'announced at a later date,' will make this switch automatic and add support for the EOS R's Scene Intelligent Auto mode.Sigma stated the "It already was a tough challenge for us to develop a high-spec lens with F1.8 throughout its zoom range. Zooming to 24mm improves sharpness. At f/1.8 the lens scores 2,470 lines, and it peaks at f/4 at 2,690 lines. At 28mm the lens manages 2,457 lines at f/1.8 and improves to 2,562 lines by f/4. Zooming all the way in to 35mm delivers 2,399 lines at f/1.8 and peaks at 2,528 lines at f/4. Edge performance when zoomed in a bit is consistently good; better than 1,800 lines at every tested focal length and aperture. Featuring Sigma's HSM (Hypersonic Motor) driven AF, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens focuses with very good speed. Canary Palm at f/1.8 at 18mm. 24MP DX Nikon D7100, f/1.8 at 1/800 at ISO 100. Full-resolution (5 MB; the palm isn't flat so much isn't in focus). The landscape photography use I mentioned above is only the tip of the iceberg for this lens' complete usefulness list.
