Who this is for: Vilo’s mesh system is perfect for someone who doesn’t have a high-speed internet plan, but they’re struggling to get a reliable Wi-Fi connection in every corner of their home. It’s affordably priced and easy to set up, and the app doesn’t overcomplicate managing your network. Vilo seemed like a mesh network setup that was too good to be true. Twenty dollars per node? Get out of town. Yeah right.

I’m not gonna go into great detail but from what I can tell, Vilo has a quality product at a great value!The front of each unit has an LED indicator light and a small button. That button is used for getting online, while the light gives you a glanceable status update based on the color of the light. All mesh Wi-Fi systems rely on a series of access points that create a blanket of coverage for your space. Each point broadcasts a Wi-Fi signal and is in constant communication with the rest of the access points that are part of the same network to ensure that each connected device is receiving the best signal and speed possible. The Vilo is a budget-class mesh system and it performs like one. The main router's speed of 347Mbps on our close-proximity (same room) throughput test was 108Mbps slower than the Meshforce M7 router and 174Mbps slower than the EnGenius ESR580, while the Asus ZenWiFi AC CT8 notched an impressive 549Mbps. On the 30-foot test, the Vilo router node fared a bit better: It managed 207Mbps, beating the Meshforce M7 and EnGenius ESR580 routers by a slim margin (205Mbps and 198Mbps, respectively). The coverage, as we’ve seen, might also not be as thorough as routers using more modern technology. Wi-Fi 6, and especially Wi-Fi 6e, offer other benefits, too. If you’ve already invested in a Wi-Fi 6 network, we wouldn’t try and convince you to rip it out and replace with a Vilo system.

Vilo recommends placing each unit within 30 feet of one another; however, we have ours placed a little over that range and haven’t had any issues. Your experience will surely vary, depending on what kind of obstacles — like walls, appliances or furniture — are between each mesh point. By far, this is one of the easiest mesh setups we’ve tested, thanks to all of the units already being paired and ready to connect to one another. Other systems require you to use the app to add more mesh units to your network, extending the amount of time it takes to get your system up and running.

Vilo has one of the most responsive and nicest teams I’ve talked too. If I have any problems whatsoever there seems to be a huge community of people to help out. Great company all around. We’d hesitate to recommend the Vilo system for a household that routinely has multiple people streaming 4K videos, gaming online or doing other bandwidth-heavy tasks, however. This system just isn’t built to handle that type of work. It’s best to think of the Vilo Mesh setup as an entry-level Wi-Fi system that will expand your coverage and provide a more reliable connection, but it’s not going to impress with a bandwidth-heavy workload. I have been through A LOT of routers of various brands over the past 15 years (Netgear, Asus, DLink, Linksys…) and used to do internet installs for a wireless company many years ago. Bottom line, I’d recommend these for a basic setup. I had my doubts about this system, but it has proved to be incredibly reliable! Turns out I only use 2 of the nodes but it never hurts to have EXTRA coverage. Simple setup and provides whole home coverage for a large technically 4-story house (including basement and attic)

There’s also no way to force a connection to a specific router. This isn’t usually a problem, because devices connect to the closest option for the best possible speed, but my desktop PC kept connecting to a router farther away on the 2.4-GHz band instead of the nearest on the 5-GHz band like I would expect. A firmware update improved this too, though it still occasionally connects to the router upstairs.
