About this deal

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)has worked with the Property Care Association (PCA) to establish the PCA Invasive Weed Control Group (IWCG) trade body for Japanese knotweed specialists, which provides a register of vetted consultants and contractors.

Liz Potter, editor of Garden Answers, says, "We like to be organic as much as possible on Garden Answers – if you think about it, a weed is often just a misunderstood wildflower growing in the wrong place, and even dandelions can be an important source of nectar for early bees on the wing. Several species of Persicaria and Polygonum, including Persicaria lapathifolia and P. maculosa can also be troublesome weeds but are not as invasive. Additionally it should be noted that aless troublesomeform of Japanese knotweed is grown in gardens, Reynoutria japonica var. compactaand its cultivars. The use of bleach or salt to kill weeds on paths and drives is strongly discouraged, as this can cause pollution and damage plants.

As its rhizomes are close to the surface of the soil, it is possible to reduce infestations of ground elder by removing it carefully with a garden fork. However, eradicating it completely needs vigilance as the smallest portion of root left in the soil will result in a new plant growing. Cultural control Pressure washing of hard surfaces gets rid of small weeds and moss, as well as clearing residues of soil and organic matter that would provide seed beds for weeds

For smaller trees the stumps can be pulled out with a winch. These can be hired by gardeners with the knowledge to use them safely. For leverage it is necessary to leave a good sized stub on the stump (up to 1.2m (4ft) high) rather than cutting it off at ground level. First, consider whether this can be done using non-chemical means such as digging out or other methods like burning or the application of hot water. Where these methods are not feasible, chemical controls may need to be used. As drives, paths and patios are usually unplanted areas, a more long-lasting solution is to use a residual weedkiller combining glyphosate/diflufenican (SBM Job done Path Weedkiller (Ready-to-use only), Job done Tough Weedkiller ( Ready-to-use) orWeedol Pathclear range). Weedkillers for gardeners (Adobe Acrobat pdf document outlining weedkillers available to gardeners; see section 3, 4 and 5) Links The best time to apply weedkillers to nettles is when they are in vigorous growth, but have not yet flowered. Digging up the plants can be done at any time of year. Cultural control

Generally, we would recommend keeping your dog off the grass for at least 30 hours. Can weed killer kill dogs? Spraying in the evening will be far more effective than spraying during the day as more of the chemical will be absorbed by the foliage Weedkillers for gardeners (Adobe Acrobat pdf document outlining weedkillers available to gardeners; see sections 1b, 4 and 5) Links Annual meadow grass ( Poa annua): Will not be controlled by selectiveweedkillers. Feed to encourage other grasses.Seeds freely; always use grass box on the mower. Returf small areas of infestation. It is shallow-rooted and encouraged by frequent watering in dry weather. It is worth specifying how deep you would like the stump ground to. Shallow grinding, 20-25cm (8-10in), is normally sufficient for laying turf, but you should allow for deeper, 30cm (1ft), or more if replanting or landscaping. Also think about what you want to do with the sawdust. It can be left to fill in the hole, used as mulch in other areas of the garden, or taken away by the contractors. Specify which of these you would prefer before the work is started and be sure to have any diseased wood removed completely.

Try digging out isolated specimens, removing as much of the tap root as possible early in the spring. Dandelions can regenerate from fragments of root so it may require several attempts to completely remove a deep or awkwardly positioned plant. There are many specially designed tools to help with removal. Dig plants out as soon as they appear and don’t allow to flower and set seed. Weedkillercontrol Apply a weedkiller directly to the stump, concentrating it in the outer ring of live tissue just beneath the bark SBK Brushwood Killer contains a selective andgrowth-regulating weedkiller (triclopyr) which breaks down in the soil within about six weeks. It controls most broad-leaved weeds and young woody saplings. It does not kill grass, though some damage to lawns and fine turf may occur. It is effective applied to the foliage of woody plants such as bramblesfrom spring until autumn. If after three weeks the seeds fail to emerge, the seedlings or cuttings are distorted, show less growth than in the controls or exhibit fern-like growth in the suspect growing media, while control plants are normal, there are strong grounds to believe weedkiller residues are present. What to do Roses, tomatoes, potatoes, brassicas and vines are particularly sensitive to this type of weedkiller.Apply the spray in mid-summer when there is lots of leafy growth, then reapply if necessary later in summer
