As its rhizomes are close to the surface of the soil, it is possible to reduce infestations of ground elder by removing it carefully with a garden fork. However, eradicating it completely needs vigilance as the smallest portion of root left in the soil will result in a new plant growing. For smaller trees the stumps can be pulled out with a winch. These can be hired by gardeners with the knowledge to use them safely. For leverage it is necessary to leave a good sized stub on the stump (up to 1.2m (4ft) high) rather than cutting it off at ground level. First, consider whether this can be done using non-chemical means such as digging out or other methods like burning or the application of hot water. Where these methods are not feasible, chemical controls may need to be used. As drives, paths and patios are usually unplanted areas, a more long-lasting solution is to use a residual weedkiller combining glyphosate/diflufenican (SBM Job done Path Weedkiller (Ready-to-use only), Job done Tough Weedkiller ( Ready-to-use) orWeedol Pathclear range). Generally, we would recommend keeping your dog off the grass for at least 30 hours. Can weed killer kill dogs? Try digging out isolated specimens, removing as much of the tap root as possible early in the spring. Dandelions can regenerate from fragments of root so it may require several attempts to completely remove a deep or awkwardly positioned plant. There are many specially designed tools to help with removal. Dig plants out as soon as they appear and don’t allow to flower and set seed. If after three weeks the seeds fail to emerge, the seedlings or cuttings are distorted, show less growth than in the controls or exhibit fern-like growth in the suspect growing media, while control plants are normal, there are strong grounds to believe weedkiller residues are present. What to do Roses, tomatoes, potatoes, brassicas and vines are particularly sensitive to this type of weedkiller.Apply the spray in mid-summer when there is lots of leafy growth, then reapply if necessary later in summer
