About this deal

In the beginning of my fountain pen quest I was hooked by variety of reasonably priced chinese fountain pens. Jinahos and Baoers propelled me into the hobby. With time I switched to more expensive pens with more nuanced design but I still enjoy some of chinese creations. Jinhao X750 is among my favorite ones.

The good news is that the pen allows for posting and is very light. The pen puts down a nice amount of ink onto the paper and allows for a good upside-down flow.I'm satisfied with having made 3 previously unusable pens usable for me; it's a little more expensive than I would have liked with the customs fee, but still totally reasonable, especially as I got all this during the Easter sale. FPR has sales fairly often, so you can probably get a good deal on these nibs if you want to experiment. If collector’s items are what you seek, then the Jinhao 999 will be sure to leave whoever sees it in awe. Good starter pen? If it's all you can afford, sure, but the Pilot Metropolitan can be had for just five dollars more. FPR nibs aren't bad, but you get what you pay for and they may not fit. It's not worth wasting the money especially with how much better a Jowo nib is.

By biggest criticism of this pen--and the one that keeps it from being considered a great entry level pen on par with the Metropolitan and even the Safari, is the cap. The cap on my pen is a friction fit, snap-on/off cap that opens and closes with a nice, satisfying "pop," but rotates and rattles terribly when closed. It gives one the impression that the cap will fall off at any moment, though this has not happened yet. The photo above shows that the cap is held on by a plastic internal cap that does not inspire confidence as to its durability. Despite the nice torpedo shape of the pen, the cap does not post firmly. For deliveries to the Rest of the World, Royal Mail suggests up to 21 working days for parcels to arrive. Jinhao X450: I like the X750 better, functionally because the section of the X450 isn't entirely round. It has grooves on the section where it expects the user to grip. The nib of the X450 is smoother, but I think these are the same nibs and any difference is due to manufacturing variation. Aesthetically, I prefer the X750 because the cap band isn't as plain, and the metal doesn't appear to stand out as on the X450, although it might be because of the colors of the pen. Since the Jinhao X750 is a snap cap-designed pen, it won’t have any threads towards the nib. This makes the pen more comfortable to hold when writing as threads can hurt your fingers.

Line variation- they don't advertise the nibs as flexible and I wouldn't (and don't officially) call them flex nibs, but if you want to, by golly you can get some half-decent line variation with these nibs. If there were a brushed steel X450, then it would be closer. Furthermore, there is selective gold plating on the nib of the X450, but it is inaccurate. I would rather have no plating or total plating rather than inaccurate selective plating. For more information, see my review of two X450's.

The pen is no doubt made for someone with large or average hands. It's not a small pen, and although the cap posts solidly, the full length when posted is substantial. It won't break any measurement records, but it's neither slim nor short. No box- I can't really complain too much about this one, because frankly we could sell it with a box if we wanted to…there just isn't one provided by the manufacturer. Since the main appeal of this pen is value, adding in a box and driving up the price to cover it just didn't seem practical to us. It's not at all uncommon for less expensive pens like the Platinum Preppy, and Pilot Varsity to sell without a box. Some retailers carrying the X750 choose to sell it with a box, it's up to each retailer if they choose to do so. The Jinhao 599 has a number 6 sized nib that is made from stainless steel. It also has a Jinhao branded converter that holds a reasonable amount of ink. The 599 is a full-sized fountain pen with a plastic body, influenced by the Lamy Safari [2]. It is available in a range of colours, including metallic gold and translucent grey. When the Jinhao is in the hand, it’s extremely heavy. This is good for those who prefer heavier pens but it won’t be for those who prefer lighter acrylic pens. The Jinhao 999 is themed after a traditional Chinese dragon with a bright red soul stone in the center. Ours was a bright blue but it’s also available in red and grey.

And a closer picture of the X450 I had with the Goulet nib installed (where you can see the difference int he grip). Jinhao included a piston converter which saves you from having to fork out for a third-party supplier. You also get the peace of mind that it was designed for this pen in particular, so there won’t be any compatibility issues. Comfort– If you don't mind the weight, the pen is very well-balanced, the grip is cozy, and the finish of the pen is ever so slightly textured so that you keep a solid grip even when you write for a long period, something not all solid-metal pens can provide.

It has a number 6 sized nib that can be easily replaced by simply pulling out the nib and removing it from the feed. Pelikan M600 and M620: For more than 20 times the price for the M600, and more than 40 times the price for the M620, they had better be better. But it is remarkable that the X750 can even be compared with them. I currently have a M600 with a nib from a M620, which I review here. The M620 flows faster, and so it produces a more consistent line. The nib is more forgiving of varying writing angles, and is just very easy to use. It can be taken to very fast writing speeds and not make me worry that it can't keep up, while the maximum flow rate of the X750 is just too dry to give me that confidence. However, the longer nib of the X750 makes it easier for me to control, and its sensitivity to varying writing pressures gives me greater ability to vary my stroke shapes. The M620 has an integrated piston filler, which gives it much higher ink capacity. Aesthetically, the two pens are so different that they fit into different niches. For the M600, aesthetics are closer to the domain of this X750. Functionally, the they are so close that the current price of the M620 cannot be justified. From a logical perspective, the X750 is the obvious choice, but this is the FPN. People pay a lot for aesthetics, finer workmanship (even where it doesn't matter), and other stuff. The 993 is a fountain pen with a cap shaped in the form of a shark head, aimed at children or as a novelty pen. [4] 8802 'Shell' [ edit ]
