About this deal

Nobody batted an eyelid; there was too much paperwork to get through and too many questions to be answered concerning Billie’s wellbeing. Meant to Be: My Journey to Motherhood by Lisa Faulkner is out now in hardback and in paperback on 5th March.

Ive had this book on my tbr list for a while, as I knew I needed to be in the right place mentally to be able to read it and to have the time to reflect. At this moment Billie was in the shared care of the local authority and her birth mother; we were simply the foster carers until all the court assessments were completed. I had 3 attempts but like Lisa I only have fleeting memories, I think it was all too sad and hidden away.In a raw and inspiring story of one woman’s journey through motherhood, family life and self-discovery, Lisa explores the many forms that family can take, and discovers the power of embracing your Plan B. When the doctor told me this, I had no idea they wouldn’t be able to move the baby to where it was meant to be, that I’d need surgery to have my tube removed. I realised what was most important: to love unconditionally, to nurture and mould, to watch a child grow and flourish. This is not a book for the faint hearted,I can relate to her story as I have been through the pain of conceiving as a parent.

I understood looking at her how important the routine must be and how vital it was that she had her familiar sheets and teddies around her. From the moment I heard Lisa talking to Chris Evans on Virgin Radio, I knew I needed to read this book. This book is good for anyone who has been through this, or, equally, for those who haven’t, to gain an understanding of this difficult journey. She was always chatting, using a language that she had made up, mixed with a few real words and sounds, always pointing to things and asking what they were. While the assessments were being carried out by the courts, as well as giving Billie her everyday care, we would be taking her for regular contact visits with her birth mother and monthly ‘looked-after child reviews’ with social services, not to mention being on the receiving end of home visits from social workers and district nurses. So here I would like to recommend this book no matter if you have children or not, or if you are having trouble falling pregnant you may find some suggestions in Lisa's book Meant to Be.

Hearst UK is the trading name of the National Magazine Company Ltd, 30 Panton Street, Leicester Square, London, SW1Y 4AJ. It was emotional and complicated and delicate for every single person involved and we were all just trying to do our best for this wonderful little girl. It was just a bag, but I had really wanted to use it; filling it with nappies, wipes, a change of clothes, snacks and a book had brought me so much joy.Thank you Lisa for being so honest with your experience, this book really helped me and I related to everything she went through with ivf. A very warm and frank telling of the many years Lisa and her now ex husband and their infertility story. We recently went to see the film Instant Family, which is about adoption, with a friend who has two adopted children, too. I would recommend this book to anyone who is experiencing infertility as it will remind you that you are not alone in your feelings, even on those darker days.
