About this deal

Oyster sauce is traditionally made with oyster extract and wheat flour, but this one is made with corn starch instead of wheat, which makes it gluten free.

Over time I’ve received many questions about how to replace oyster sauce to make a dish vegetarian. The simplest answer is to buy a bottle of vegetarian oyster sauce, often known as mushroom-flavored stir fry sauce. Alternatively you can definitely make your own vegetarian stir fry sauce with just a few simple steps. For this particular sauce, the ingredients are as follows: “Dried cane syrup, all-natural caramel color, salt, GMO-free unmodified corn starch, vinegar, maltodextrin, natural oyster extract. Dried shiitake mushrooms - these have a really concentrated umami flavor that's far stronger than fresh mushrooms.Lee Kum Kee: A renowned name in the world of sauces, Lee Kum Kee offers gluten-free oyster sauce that retains the traditional taste without compromising dietary needs. Finally, you can use it straight up or slightly diluted as a drizzle over steamed veggies (usually Chinese broccoli), but I highly recommend using the premium LKK oyster sauce for this. The other brands I find too salty. Case in point, in Thailand where Maekrua is our main oyster sauce, we don’t usually use it straight up. Since our list is already going to focus on gluten-free oyster sauce, we will be looking at some other troublesome ingredients that may cause harm to some people. However, before you do, let’s discuss a few key points in what to look for in a good gluten-free oyster sauce brand. Buyer’s Guide This doesn't match our taste test or the protein content in any way, EXCEPTthe two LKK brands differ as expected. I'm certain that this is because the way LKK defines “oyster extract” is the same between their 2 product lines, but other brands define it differently. How concentrated and diluted is this oyster extract? We don't know. And what does "oysters" even mean in the case of Healthy Boy? We also don't know. Not to mention the cooking process and the quality of oysters...there are just too many unknowns.

Most oyster sauce adds wheat starch making the condiment unsafe for people on a no gluten diet. But there are lots of brands out there making gluten free oyster sauce that’s safe for people who can’t consume gluten. Some individuals may require oyster sauce substitutes due to dietary restrictions. People following a vegan or vegetarian diet will need alternatives as oyster sauce is made from oyster extracts. Gluten-free diets mandate gluten-free options, and individuals avoiding soy or monitoring sodium intake also seek replacements.

Oyster sauce is most commonly used in Asian cuisines, such as Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. It is often cooked with meat and vegetable dishes, such as stir-fries, and noodle dishes, like chow mein. How to Make a Gluten-Free Oyster Sauce Alternative What are the best gluten-free oyster sauces? Oyster sauce, without wheat or yeast extract derived from wheat, is considered to be gluten-free. While there is virtually no difference in how gluten-free sauce tastes from the non-gluten-free sauce, there might be some discrepancy when it comes to consistency. For a vegetarian alternative, combine mushroom broth with soy sauce to create an oyster sauce substitute. The mushroom broth provides an umami flavor profile, while the soy sauce ensures the proper saltiness. Mix equal parts mushroom broth and soy sauce, then reduce the mixture to a sauce-like consistency before using it as a substitute. Homemade Vegan and Vegetarian Alternatives Yes, you get vegetarian oyster sauce in the market. The vegetarian alternative is made with mushrooms, mushroom water, ginger root, salt, and a few other ingredients like dates, coconut amino, etc.

If you do not own a blender, what you can do is mince the rehydrated mushrooms into very fine pieces before cooking. If you do this, cook them over a lower heat so you won’t burn the mushrooms. I found that not only does it work great in stir fries, it’s also delicious eaten raw. Please feel free to experiment with the sauce, like adding it into salad dressing, using it as a dipping sauce, or even spreading it on a piece of toast!Oyster sauce is made of oyster extract, sugar, salt, cornstarch, or wheat starch and some makers add soy sauce as well.
