A gripe that the majority of the experts share is that the Ghost 13 “lags behind in responsiveness.” They agree that it’s simply not "it" for those who want to go fast. Smooth and stable ride DNA Loft is the newer of the two midsole foams in the Ghost 13 but it feels very similar to BioMogo. I hope that Brooks transitions to their new DNA Flash foam which is lighter and much more responsive. The Ghost 14 continues to hit its stride by offering the perfect blend of flexibility and stability in the outsole. The midsole of the Ghost 13 is a dual foam setup of DNA Loft on the lateral side and BioMogo on the medial side. The two foams are very similar in density so the ride is still very balanced and stable.
Fleet Feet runners reviewed the Brooks Ghost 13 to see how the updated midsole changed the feel and to find out how well it lives up to the Ghost name. Here’s what they thought. My first run was on a cold winter morning and I could feel the icy wind on my feet so it’s definitely airy and breathable.
Brooks Ghost 14 First Impressions
Most of the daily trainers have received sweeping updates which have improved them drastically and are all worthy upgrades of their predecessors. The thinner mesh also makes the forefoot feel more spacious but it fits true to size. It’s available in 4 different men’s widths and 3 women’s widths if you need them. The Ghost has an enormous, loyal fan base. It’s a certain type of runner who buys the Ghost every year: the type of runner who doesn’t like taking risks when it comes to running shoes.

The Ghost personality came through strongly even in my first couple of metres in them. Also, because the Ghost 12 primarily had cushioning in the heel, it made it a great shoe for heel strikers. The extension of the DNA Loft cushioning to the forefoot in the Ghost 13 allows for a smoother transition which makes this shoe a great choice for any runner no matter their foot strike pattern.
Brooks Ghost 14 Intro
Dozens of perforations in the mesh create a vent over the toe box to let excess heat and moisture escape. Testers didn’t experience any clamminess even during humid summer runs. The biggest update is the change of mesh. It feels thinner, more breathable and gives the Ghost 14 a more streamlined feel but it’s still a warm upper that’s more suited to cooler climates. This is a perfect shoe for both beginners and seasoned runners – it’s versatile! It’s cushioned enough for longer runs and recovery runs and also works well for shorter tempo runs. If you like a plush cushioned shoe that also provides the right amount of firmness and stability (for a neutral shoe), the Ghost 13 is a good choice. I like it for daily training and long runs. It’s also a great shoe for heel strikers thanks to the extra cushioning in the heel. Brooks Ghost 13 Shoe Specs Version 14 feels more versatile and more performance-oriented than version 13 because of its streamlined upper, snappier forefoot and its new full DNA Loft midsole.
DNA Loft was present in the heel of the Ghost 12. Now, as previously mentioned, in the Ghost 13, you get more of that cushioning – Brooks extended it from the heel to the forefoot. Because of this, many testers found it softer than the 12. It wasn’t super obvious to me (both shoes feel plush and soft), but there is a tinge more softness in the 13. The secure feel is carried throughout the upper where a padded heel collar and tongue create a secure feel that keeps your foot engaged over the DNA Loft foam, helping the Ghost easily transition from long miles to speed work. The Ghost 13 felt softer right when I stepped in,” one Fleet Feet tester says. “But it’s still super smooth and easy going on the run. The rest of the upper is what you come to expect from a Brooks Ghost. It has generous amounts of foam in its tongue, collar and heel.

A plush bed of DNA Loft foam provides soft cushioning and smooth transitions. The DNA Loft works with a Segmented Crash Pad to provide flexibility to every toe off. I hate the feeling of wearing clown shoes so I had to exchange them for a half size smaller. Overall the fit is much more roomy than previous versions of the Ghost. Forefoot DNA cushioning gel is a highly viscous liquid that changes to become more or less firm in response to each individual's weight, pace, biomechanics, and running environment. The Ghost 14 blends together this flexibility with a stabilizing outsole geometry that supports each landing and take off with plush padding. S-257 Cushsole is a midsole compound used as an insole to deliver even more cushioning and flexibility.
