There's no voice, no sudden smell of incense. But somewhere in the swirl of me, you also become present." Ley, Tom (9 July 2018). "Gather Your Mates And Have A Laugh at England's "It's Coming Home" World Cup Meme". Deadspin. Archived from the original on 9 July 2018. Should anything be taboo? “There are things that should,” he replies, “but I don’t think they are anything to do with being un-woke.”

Frank Skinner is a dad at 55... and his son is named Buzz Cody". Daily Mirror. 27 May 2012 . Retrieved 28 October 2014. He performed his first stand-up gig in December 1987. His first television appearance in 1988 met with fits of laughter from the audience and 131 complaints, including one from cabinet minister Edwina Currie. He met fellow comedian David Baddiel in 1990, and the two went on to share a flat throughout the early 90s and to create the hit TV series Fantasy Football League. In July 2019, Skinner told The Times that he had always voted for the Labour Party, but said he would probably vote for the Green Party at the next election (which was held in December that year). Though Skinner also talks about being a practising Catholic who daily reads the Bible, there is nothing pious in the tone. Instead, he often raises a laugh – a first for any prayer book, in my experience.

But when I talk about growing up in the West Midlands, there wasn’t an alternative voice for me to either respond to or ignore.” The Jason Lee incident, he accepts, was a different situation. “By then we’d come through the alternative comedy circuit, where ‘non-racist, non-sexist’ was the banner handle. So it’s not like we didn’t know. Because me and Dave knew.” Catholicism was, he recalls, a big part of family life, and his education – “statue-kissing, entrail-centric saint depictions and skeletons in bridal veils” is one description he uses in the book. He left the Church at 17. I’m guessing he means Capaldi?” Skinner ponders, looking at me for confirmation. Then his expression changes. “I hope it’s not William Hartnell!” The actor who played the First Doctor, after all, would be 114 by now. Overall, if I was to recommend this book to someone I would give them a good understanding of what to expect. I wouldn't reveal the jokes or the stories but I would let them know it could have a big influence on the opinion you originally held of Frank Skinner.Definitely. I think he can start getting the mugs made. If the Labour party doesn’t win the next election, you wonder if they’ll be here for another one. The great thing about this book is that it writing it has infinately made him a better, more reflective person about life, despite the uber modesty and embarrasment somewhat at having to write the book. Seriously, you feel that he thinks it absurd he would be asked to write one. Whereas much of this is self-effacing with the grandeur of his stories (he is far too modest for his own good), he seems as though he is going on a genuine journey, a catharsis of growth even. Someone recently said to me, in reference to my poetry podcast, that you'd think poetry would be more popular than ever, in the twenty-first century, because people don't have a lot of time and 'novels are often quite big while poems are often quite small'. I referred them to Doctor Who's Tardis.'

I do enjoy an autobiography and it has been a long time since I have read one. I do prefer autobiographies to biographies as I feel you get to know the person better, they make the person feel more approachable and understanding. So I did feel I got to know the real Frank. Lou Sanders on shame, skating and her new show, Unforgivable: ‘You don’t have to be broken to be funny’ a b c Gordon, Bryony (2 January 2013). "Frank Skinner: 'I'd like to go through a dark night of the soul' ". The Daily Telegraph. Archived from the original on 12 January 2022 . Retrieved 6 June 2018. To wit: his name isn't even Frank Skinner. It is Christopher Graham Collins. His parents still call him Graham, but when he was getting into stand-up comedy there was already a Chris Collins registered with Equity, a man who happened to be a singer from Burnley, so the comedian from the West Midlands had to change his name. Firstly, I really like the guy. He’s down to earth and a very funny stand up. It’s certainly not ghosted because if it was it would be a lot more regimented in its structure and it definately seems that he has either pulled rank or put his foot down at the publisher to have it set in this way. Keh, Andrew (7 July 2018). "England Takes Another Step Toward Bringing 'It' Home". The New York Times . Retrieved 9 July 2018.

Skinner considers the afterlife and is troubled by concepts of heaven and hell. He asks questions that other Christians have raised through the centuries: "I am promised eternal bliss if I'm a good person, but such bliss, knowing that my mother, or anyone else for that matter smoulders and screams, can only be achieved by an unimaginable amount of callous indifference."Plunkett, John (16 June 2009). "Frank Skinner extends contract at Absolute Radio". The Guardian. London . Retrieved 16 June 2009. Three Lions comes home to Number 1, sets new chart record". officialcharts.com. 13 July 2018 . Retrieved 14 July 2018. Skinner once had a chat with Eddie Izzard about what they could share about their lives on stage. The conclusion was that it was fine for Izzard to discuss wearing women’s clothes, but as for Skinner’s own religious beliefs? God, no. Yet recently even that position has shifted a little. Last year he published A Comedian’s Prayer Book, which features him talking to the supreme being in his typically down-to-earth way (“I always liked that Jesus hung out with sinners. It made me feel potentially understood”). Does he feel more comfortable talking about God on stage now?
