The Samsung Galaxy Watch3 offered similar battery life in testing, but the Fitbit Sense lasted around three days. The fitness service expands its offering in watchOS 8 with Picture in Picture support and new filtering options. With watchOS 8, users can now stop and start an in-progress workout on any device. You do need to get the gesture right though, and too often we found that Siri wasn’t in fact listening, which turns you off from using a voice assistant instantly, especially if other people can see you.

I added the elevation complication to my watch face, and it was interesting to see it change in real time, especially as I approached the beach near my house, which in certain areas is below sea level, according to the Series 6. Apple says it increased the maximum brightness of the display from 200 nits to 500 nits when your wrist is down, which makes it easier to see in the sunlight. That's a welcome addition for me personally, as I live in Florida and spend a lot of time at the beach. And I can attest that the Series 6's screen is noticeably easier to read when I'm outside walking my dog and glance down. Portraits Watch Face and Photos: watchOS 8 introduces new ways to view and engage with users’ favorite photos right from their wrist. Apple’s new Portraits watch face brings portrait photos shot on iPhone to Apple Watch with “an immersive, multilayered effect, intelligently recognizing faces in photos and cropping in to highlight the subject,” explained Apple. The Photos app has also been redesigned, offering users new ways to view and navigate collections, Memories and Featured Photos via Apple Watch. Photos can also be shared through Messages and Mail with the new Share Sheet feature. The Apple Watch Series 6 has an always-on altimeter setting so a user can see elevation changes on a hike, for example, in real time. Users can measure their blood-oxygen saturation, which represents how much oxygen is carried by red blood cells from the lungs to the rest of the body, from the watch wherever they are. The Apple Watch Series 6 also features an ECG app that the company said can generate an ECG similar to an electrocardiogram.

It is not intended for use by people under 22 years old or those who have been previously diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AFib). That shouldn't put off prospective Watch owners who like the idea of a heart rate monitor on their wrist – it was as good as anything we've tested of late, bar some really high-end running watches; it's just that it still lost connection from time to time.

As ever, battery life on a new Apple Watch is strange. Once again, we regularly got far longer than the advertised 18 hours between charges, usually hitting around 28-30 hours before needing to reach for the charging cable. It's lightweight too – at 36.5 grams (for the 44mm edition) we didn't feel it weighing down our wrist very often, and it's sometimes easy to forget you have it on. Apple Watch Series 9 has a water resistance rating of 50 meters under ISO standard 22810:2010. This means that it may be used for shallow-water activities like swimming in a pool or ocean. However, Apple Watch Series 9 should not be used for scuba diving, waterskiing, or other activities involving high-velocity water or submersion below shallow depth. Focus: The Focus feature is a “powerful set of tools available in iOS 15 to help users reduce distraction and be in the moment,” according to Apple; now, Focus is available on watchOS 8. Apple Watch Series 6 will automatically align with Focus on iOS, so notifications from people and apps are filtered based on the user’s current activity. But... for the most part. According to the Health app on the phone, which records this information, there was a moment when our SPO2 level fell to 88% – was that something to worry about? We assumed that, because it wasn't repeated, it was just an outlier reading, but it was still a little disconcerting to see. When you start a blood oxygen scan, you'll see a 15-second countdown timer on the screen along with a relaxing blue and red graphic. After 15 seconds, your blood oxygen saturation percentage will appear onscreen. You can also view blood oxygen measurements in the Health app on your iPhone.
