In Ewan’s book, he says that it was Miss Pennyface, but parts of that book are lies and parts are true. At the very end, Martha confirms that it was Curtis who killed Katie.

A] propulsive thriller . . . There are truly horrifying scenes. . . . Maggie soon learns what we already know: Real life is scarier than ghost stories.” Okay Riley you did it...you have made it to my all time favorite thrillers list! I am sure he is so pleased..🤣🤣...You are now up on the ledge with Peter, Liz and Samantha...no last names needed, they are like Madonna.....No but really...this book just flew to the top of my must read books. I loved every single thing about this book...literally everything. Andreeva, Nellie (August 17, 2018). " 'The Florida Project's Brooklynn Prince To Headline Apple's Hilde Lysiak Series". I think it is a perfect example of his style.

Biographies come in many flavors but Susan Cheever's book strikes an excellent balance between an examination of a gifted writer and an expose' by a member of John Cheever's own family who is herself a writer. The biography is full of interesting details, some drawn from John Cheever's journals but many simply observations culled from a lifetime of personal experiences with the author as father & writer in almost equal measure. Riley Sager is one of the most brilliant authors raises the bars and waltz between genres and serves us fresh baked from oven kind of delicious, soul crushing, mind numbing, exhilarating, surprising stories with WTF I just read kind of twisty, the rug pulled out from your feet kind of endings. Getting to alternate between Maggie's perspective and full chapters from her father's novel, House of Horrors, was an absolutely delightful way to read this story. I loved how Sager constructed it. This book sure wasn't what I expected it to be from reading the synopsis, it was so much better. But the book should come with a warning.....make sure that you have some Kleenex near by, all of a sudden things would happen out of no where and the next thing I knew I had tears running down my face, and it wasn't just once it happened multiple times. a b Takeuchi, Craig (November 13, 2018). "Filming in Vancouver: New TV series The Murders and Magic Hour, fantasy-romance feature Undying". Inside Vancouver. Archived from the original on November 16, 2020 . Retrieved December 2, 2018.

At least that’s what Maggie’s father claimed in his best-selling NON-FICTION book, “House of Horrors”....a book that Maggie doesn’t believe a word of. The Holts experience several strange events that appear to reference both the Carver murder-suicide as well as the house's original owner, William Garson, and his daughter Indigo. Five-year-old daughter Maggie has expressed fear of a being she calls "Mister Shadow" and has an imaginary playmate called "Miss Pennyface", so named because she has pennies on her eyes. Ewan begins to investigate the house's history, assisted by Petra Ditmer, teenage daughter of housekeeper Elsa Ditmer. After the kitchen ceiling collapses, Ewan discovers letters that detail a love affair between Indigo Garson and a painter. The letters contradict local legend that Indigo had committed suicide. It is revealed that Indigo was murdered and that her spirit has been taking revenge by killing young girls in a way that pushes the blame onto their fathers. The Holt family flee the house, never to return. I was racing towards the conclusion trying to discover how much of House of Horrors was actually true. Maggie's father was definitely a convincing author!

There are very few authors whose new novels I look forward to with as much anticipation as I do a new Riley Sager novel, and this year’s release is his best yet. HOME BEFORE DARK isan instant classic haunted house story, and a tale that belongs in the company of the horror genre staples that inspired it. A chilling blend of supernatural suspense and compelling family mystery, HOME BEFORE DARK is an iconic new thriller from an author who just gets better and better every year. Readers in the market for a psychological thriller that blends a spine-tingling ghost story with a gripping tale of a woman’s investigation of her own family history will devour Sager’s exceptional new release, HOME BEFORE DARK. And Ewan’s book is more entertaining and horrifying than Megan’s POV, making you feel like any time Winchester Brothers appear out of nowhere to help the family pouring salt on the floor and put the ghosts on fire. Especially the creepy song plays at the night time gave me so much creeps and huge desire to scream till my throat burns.

Baneberry Hall was such a presence in the story. It was ominous and creepy AF. It definitely gave me Overlook Hotel vibes with the way the history of the property felt so vibrant and in your face. She was only five, when they lived in the house, and she doesn’t remember the people or events mentioned, or the “ghosts” she was terrified of, “Miss Pennyface” and “Mister Shadow”. a b Thompson, Simon (April 24, 2020). Movie / TV Show Adaptation

It is a very even series, that never has any deep valleys of boredom that most TV series eventually suffer from. In the aftermath, Maggie's mom (who was out of the country) arrives. She tells Maggie that it wasn't Dane. She says that Maggie was the one who killed Petra. Petra was babysitting and when they came home, there were signs of a physical altercation and she had clearly been pushed down the stairs. Ewan made up most of the stuff about ghosts in the book (he wrote it to capitalize off the house's spooky history because they needed the money), though the night terrors were real. Afterwards, Maggie is alone when Martha emerges from the armoire. With the moonlight glinting off her spectacles, Maggie realizes Martha is Miss Pennyface. It was my second most anticipated book of July. And here I am sitting and thinking how horribly can a author murder a book!

In the end, everyone is happy and a big family. Lila is coming out of her rebellious stage and the truth is all out in the open. You might believe in ghosts; you might not. But a story with a ghost inhabiting a creaky old house and haunting its new residents is simply irresistible. At least in the right hands, and Riley Sager’s definitely are the right hands. From the shadowy figures in the woods to the sounds that go bump in the night, Home Before Dark is certain to creep you out.” I’m not going to ruin the story but I will leave you with this quote “Oh Maggie, she says. “You really shouldn’t have done that. “ Unease slams onto my shoulders, so forceful that all of Baneberry Hall seems to shake.” Also it’s a wonder why anyone would build an estate and let poisonous berries grow all over your property even though you have a young child, then you name the place after the plant, craziness. You will all love it, just buy it, you won’t be sorry!!! Maggie Holt is used to such questions. Twenty-five years ago, she and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. They spent three weeks there before fleeing in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His tale of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity—and skepticism.
