About this deal

And there is a huge amount of green space on the doorstep: Ashtead Common and Epsom Common (which run into each other) are on the edge of town, while Epsom Racecourse is just a few minutes away.

I find his writing such a joy – it’s a pleasure to read and sometimes you just need someone who will make you smile. He pretends to direct the same wit against himself, but tends to be kinder toward himself than toward others. The first of them, Down the Garden Path, centered on his home and garden at Glatton and has been in print almost continuously since 1932. As it is with comfort, so it is with taste; to linger in the Tudors is merely a sign of aesthetic adolescence; one must more on the eighteenth century, and if one has any sense, stay there. I have been looking out for affordable copies of his house/garden books but so far have only been successful in getting one – Down The Garden Path.

My lovely old oak bedroom floors are indeed ski slopes and the beds have to be on blocks to stop people from rolling out of their beds.If young married persons persist in their selfish pursuit of populating the planet, they should be compelled to bear the consequences. It made me feel bad to enjoy myself—as well as nervous; one felt always the peril of disagreeing with his pronouncements on taste.

The stories of the garden and the dramas it has witnessed are as I have described them, though, as a fond father, I may at times have dabbed a little paint on one of the lilies, or heightened the flush on the cheek of a rambling rose.Ashtead itself may not have quite the same bucolic charm as Merry Hall, but it’s a hugely popular place to live for very good reasons: there is a thriving high street, a small hospital, direct rail service to London, and the M25 is just a few minutes away. First in a trilogy, Merry Hall is the account of the restoration of a house and garden in post-war England. I’m delighted to see this review as I adore all of his books as they are so well written and they always make me laugh. At the heart of his writing is the passion of a sensitive, intelligent man who has found a creative and emotional outlet in his love of plants and the act of making a garden. Nichols' faith in the therapeutic powers of gardening is reminiscent of that in The Secret Garden (Frances Hodgson Burnett).

I suspect, particularly after the ending of his third book, that he was in fact very reluctant to leave his Tudor cottage although he seemed to have put down new roots in this second property. I am also keen to see if Narcissus ‘Cedric Morris’ is coming along, as both these treasures are often in bloom for Christmas Day. Nichols is best remembered for his books about his homes and gardens, the first of which was Down the Garden Path (1932), in which he describes the difficulties and delights of maintaining a Tudor thatched cottage in Glatton, Cambridgeshire. There was talk of the police being involved and of course this was at a time when homosexuality was illegal. The National Heritage List for England is a unique register of our country's most significant historic buildings and sites. As a reader and bibliophile, social media has enriched my life immeasurably by introducing me to books and fellow book lovers and entire universes I would never have encountered on my own. Nichols made one appearance on film - in 1931 he appeared in Glamour, directed by Seymour Hicks and Harry Hughes, playing the part of the Hon. He's an arse; an arrogant arse - the type of entitled, elitist arse that nightmares are made of, and which currently haunts Rishi Sunak's Westminster cabinet.
