Every single non-Japanese person I have met who has traveled to Japan, knitters and non-knitters alike, has told me that Japan is a must-see. That there are things that you will see in Japan that you simply cannot see anywhere else. It seems that this statement also applies to knitting. The shapes, styles and stitch patterns of Japanese knit garments have a style unique in their own right. I have not yet traveled to Japan (but it’s on my list!).It was while looking for sweater patterns on Ravelry that Japan once again crept into my mind. I found myself being drawn to patterns with some element of interesting shaping, be it a puffy sleeve or boxy waist. Many of the designers were Japanese. I then tweaked my Ravelry search to only include knitwear designers in Japan(oh Ravelry, your search options are endless!), and the result below is a selection of some of the favorite patterns I came across. Whether it is drape, pleats, boxiness, puffed out sleeves, or cropped tops with textured cables, each of these patterns feature some element that I find inspiring and atypical from the usual patterns I come across. translated and with an introduction by Gayle RoehmIn the Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible knitting guru Hitomi Shida shares some of h...

Crochet Mosaic Granny Square Pattern, 3D Mosaic Motif Pattern, Crochet Mosaic Afghan, Knitting Pattern, Crochet 3D Motif One of the magical things about knitting and crochet is the way that traditions vary a little from country to country, so you’ll probably never run out of interesting things to discover. Sure! This is one of the critical points to understand Japanese patterns. Please note that there are a few variations based on which (Japanese) standard the designer is using, but the basic idea is the same. This array of numbers should be read from the direction of your knitting. In this case, it’s bottom up, so the first set of numbers is 1-1-1. The results are worth the effort. The patterns are works of art in themselves. Many have a botanical flavour, with leaves and berries and curling stems.

If you have knitting needles from all over the world or of unknown origins, your best bet for identifying their size is by using a knitting gauge. Learn how to draw the design with your stitches without constantly making mistakes or referring to the chart keys. Everyone's knitting style is a little different. Whether it's tension, your personal knitting gauge, or the way you wrap your yarn around your fingers. But when it comes to which hand you hold your yarn in, the knitting world is pretty divided. In the US, needle sizes start at 0 and increase to 50. However, in the UK, sizes start at 14 and go up to 000.

Japanese Needle Size Chart

Intermediate Knitter: 1 skein of Koigu (or equivalent fingering-weight wool) in a medium or dark semi-solid color, or equivalent fingering weight wool yarn, size 1 straight or circular needles (see homework) The ribbing is also partially charted on the left II-I- and on the right -I-I. The I represents a knit stitch and the - represents a purl stitch, meaning that on the right side of the fabric you start with k1, p1, k1, p1 and you end the row with p1, k1, p1, k2. Charts always show the right side of the fabric. The ribbing is worked over 4 cm (10 rows), this information is given on the left side of the graph: 4(10 段).

Materials: 3-4 balls of worsted weight yarn in different colors, set of 5 size 7 double-pointed needles (or 2 circulars or 1 long circular for magic loop), a crochet hook of the same size, basic knitting toolkit. You’ve only just mastered the knit stitch, and next week you’re going to try purling for the very first time.

Fabulous Japanese stitch book by wonderful Yoko Hatta in Japan. Yoko designed our very popular Honeyblossom Cardigan a few years ago. This book is ... ummm..I don’t like knitting from charts but this might need trying! My only brush with “Japanese” was knitting a sample sweater for a knitting store from a Japanese pattern evidently translated into English by someone who had never even held a knitting needle… Although the patterns are written entirely in Japanese, they are not impossible for English-speaking knitters to read. Very light on text and very heavy on charts and schematics, with a cheat sheet of translations, any adventurous knitter can
