About this deal

Children create labels for the items, then explore the concept of memories by thinking about how things special to them hold memories and form connections to times and events in our lives. Grandad's camper van is hidden away in the garage - now Gramps isn't around any more, the adventures they shared travelling in it just wouldn't be the same.

Immediately on opening the book you are greeted with the most breathtaking bucolic scene across the endpapers as Grandad and Gramps drive rambling hills in their pink camper van. I've worked with publishers including Penguin Random House, Little Tiger Group, Andersen Press, Little Bee Books and HarperCollins, and also on freelance projects with clients such as the Sunday Times, The Washington Post and Google.

When Grandad reflects back on his life with Gramps, his memories take the visual form of vignettes showing the younger versions of the men--Grandad white, Gramps with the same brown skin tone as the girl--on the road, at home, or enjoying the great outdoors, but always delighted to be together.

Waterstones Children’s Book Award Winner and British Book Awards Nibbies Children’s Illustrated Book of the Year 2023! I love that Grandad wears a t-shirt reclaiming the pink triangle in the 1970s, and I love that children will see the story of gay grandads and know families come in all different shapes and sizes. Oh I do wish such books were around when I was a kid, wondering why I was different and who (if anyone) I could tell. But what our protagonist/narrator most likes to do is to snuggle up with her Grandad and listen to stories if his adventures with Gramps. This is the story of a small girl who loves visiting her Grandad and rummaging through the artefacts from his travels. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Woodgate's explosively colorful scenes center most of the book on the men, with snapshot after snapshot of their loving life together. It is also a story that deals with grief and the importance of sharing memories about cherished people who have passed. She loves to examine the fabulous knick-knacks he has collected on his travels and play hide and seek in his amazing garden.

The little girl can see how much her Grandad loved travelling and how much he loved Gramps, and asks him why he doesn't travel any more, but Grandad just can't see the point without Gramps. He describes their first holiday in Gramps' camper van, and how Gramps told him he wanted them to see all the wonderful things in the world together. The artwork is enticing and rich, and readers will be happy to pore over the pages studying details like Grandad's friendly dog and the textured backgrounds as they read and reread the story. This debut picture book from award-winning author-illustrator Harry Woodgate won the British Book Awards Nibbie for Children's Illustrated Book of the Year and the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, was shortlisted for the Polari Prize, and named as an ALA Stonewall Honor Book.

They will practice writing in the past progressive by creating captions for the photo album and develop their skill at writing questions in role as the little girl by interviewing Grandad about his campervan adventures. Grandad, white, and now balding, recounts their adventures to his young grandchild who hangs on every word. Caregivers, especially older ones, may see this book as an opportunity to talk about departed loved ones and introduce their happy memories to a younger generation-many a family will find themselves pulling out photo albums to relate their own origin stories. Delightfully colourful and carrying a warm, positive message of inclusion and love, Woodgate's uplifting picture book depicts a grandad recapturing the adventures of his youth courtesy of his granddaughter.Waterstones Children's Book Award Winner and British Book Awards Nibbies Children’s Illustrated Book of the Year 2023! So, their amazing granddaughter comes up with a clever plan to fix up the old camper and get Grandad excited to explore again.
