About this deal

It includes new features such as screen gesture-based navigation, Digital Balance (a dashboard for tracking and limiting device usage), HiVision (an augmented reality object recognition experience for the camera), and Password Vault among other features. While there’s not too much content that makes full use of this resolution – and, sadly, there’s no out-of-the-box option to split the screen between two windows – it’s still a sharp and vibrant display. Both displays contain notches, with the Mate 20 featuring a "teardrop" shape, and the Mate 20 Pro containing a larger tab concealing additional infrared sensors used for a face recognition system. I compared it extensively against the Pixel 3 XL and Galaxy Note 9, and I found that Huawei’s hardware just doesn’t have the dynamic range of the other two. Both models include a Kirin 970 system-on-chip and 128 GB of non-expandable internal storage, with 4 GB of RAM for the base model and 6 for the Pro.

If you want to walk around knowing that your pocket is home to some of the most cutting-edge tech it's possible to put in a phone, then the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is for you. These specs are about on par with other flagship smartphones, though the Kirin 980 is speedier than Snapdragon 845 which first appeared in a phone earlier in March. Then there are is the excellent triple camera system on the back and a monster battery that’ll last well into a second day, possibly even longer, which charges super fast too.

The Mate 20 Pro can charge up to 15W wirelessly too, and with the flip of a switch, can wirelessly charge other devices, including other phones and headphones. Even if you only agree with me to the extent of seeing the Mate 20 Pro as a viable competitor to the Note 9 and Pixel 3 XL, that still makes this phone’s absence from the American market a real loss. The phone is using graphene film cooling technology for thermal management, and is one of the first commercial products to utilize graphene for such purposes.

I'm probably nitpicking here, but it can slow down your shooting by a few seconds -- which, in a critical moment, might mean the difference between getting the shot or missing it. The Mate 20 Pro is the first device to use Huawei’s new Kirin 980 processor, which the company says is a significant improvement on last year’s Kirin 970, and is one of the first chips produced using 7nm processes. A few tiny issues aside this phone is near perfect and should be your next handset if you're looking for an Android flagship. I know this is marketed as an AI-rich phone, but I need that artificial intelligence to be predictable rather than spontaneous. The Mate 20 Pro supports both fast charging and wireless charging and, weirdly, also lets you use the phone as a wireless charger for other devices. The main camera is 40 megapixels, the ultra-wide is 20-megapixels and there’s a third eight-megapixel telephoto camera. The Unlimited version runs off-screen so that factors such as display resolution don’t affect the score.

The speed and responsiveness of the Mate 20 Pro are iPhone-like, with apps launching quickly, the camera exhibiting zero delay, and gesture animations displaying smoothly and fluidly. Still, this is big enough to genuinely get two days of life out of the phone with moderate use – though only just, so you might still want to charge it nightly if you’re unable to during the day. In Pixel terms, Huawei’s new phone has the width of the smaller Pixel 3 and the height of the larger Pixel 3 XL, so if you’ve found neither of those two quite ideal, this phone represents a happy medium. Like Apple's Face ID, it scans your face in 3D, which gives an extra depth of complexity and means it can't be fooled into unlocking by showing it a 2D picture of your own face. The other biometric ID system that Huawei adds here — the pressure-sensing fingerprint reader built into the display — also contributes to this space efficiency by removing the need for a discrete space to install a separate scanner. If you find the notch hideous, you can hide it with an effect that shifts the ‘ears’ into dark mode, which decently simulates a full black bar at the top. I've asked Huawei to confirm whether it's working with banks and other services to allow face unlock to work, but the company has yet to respond. In addition, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is one of the first phones with an in-display fingerprint reader. It still feels smooth, almost silk-like to the touch, but run your nail over it and it sounds like a record.
