About this deal

In the same vein as Balli’s previous novels, NOW YOU SEE US takes a darkly humorous approach towards addressing the challenges of marginalised women, and the issues surrounding foreign domestic workers within their own diaspora community. The audience member believes they have picked a random card, which is reinforced by the magician re-shuffling the deck several times, though this is just misdirection. When a fellow maid is falsely accused of murder however, they realise that they will have to fight back and try to clear her name as nobody else seems to be willing to.

Corazon, Donita, and Angel are Filipina domestic workers—part of the wave of women sent to Singapore to be cleaners, maids, and caregivers in its decadent homes. It was funny to me how the rich Singaporean women were portrayed because they were just like how the wealthy rich white women are described by the service workers in the US so that was super amusing to me.I was often shocked by the rudeness, disrespect and abuse levelled at other human beings on display.

Suggestions are made that the timelines, conflicting accounts, and lack of substantive evidence do not support the case, but the juries convict each of the youths of most charges. The primary focus of this novel is the real star--looking at the lives of Filipina maids in Singapore--though the maids' individual stories don't come together as much as I'd like.I REALLY enjoyed this witty, moving murder mystery novel set among Sinapore's elite and the network of Filipino immigrant workers who serve them. While there are plenty of references to food, locations, customs and habits, I never really felt much sense of place. Executive producers were expected to include DuVernay, Jeff Skoll, Jonathan King, Oprah Winfrey, Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh. Now You See Us takes place in Singapore, a country that I lived in as a child, and follows 3 Filipina domestic workers: Corazon, Donita, and Angel as they try to find the truth behind the shocking news that Flordeliza, a Filipina maid, has been accused of murdering her employer. Honestly that’s a lot of how I ended up feeling too, that if it wasn’t going to have a thick plot and focus more on day-to-day life I might as well have just read nonfiction.

But when Florediza, another Filipina domestic worker is accused of murder, the three friends find themselves roped into a rogue investigation, despite their best efforts to avoid trouble. Fann is suspicious and abusive to the young Donita; Cora has a hard time setting boundaries between her and ma'am Elizabeth and Angel, who is supplanted in her role as a caregiver by a newly hired nurse, battles the nurse for control of the household. A] dense, fast-moving series that examines not just the effects of systemic racism but the effects of all sorts of disenfranchisement (though you could argue they all have that same root cause) on people with the boys' background. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the miniseries has an approval rating of 97% based on 86 reviews, with an average rating of 8.The 3 women don’t know Flordeliza well, but the news is chilling: “she could be any of them; every worker knows stories of women who were scapegoated or even executed for crimes they didn’t commit. They shouldn’t get involved given their pasts and their present circumstances, but the mystery of what really happened and who’s to blame engulfs them anyway. The three women don’t know the accused well, but she could be any of them; every worker knows stories of women who were scapegoated or even executed for crimes they didn’t commit. Lin's portrayals of the maids and their employers bring out their very different personalities and conflicts: reserved Cora and her overly involved Ma'am Elizabeth, brazen Donita and critical Mrs. I think I enjoyed Cora’s story the most, but I really liked getting to know each of the women and I was glad I got an insight into what it is like to be a female domestic worker outside of your own country.
