The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (12A) - Phoenix Leicester - Leicester

This June, we're excited to be part of ReVive Festival - a city-wide celebration of Mods, the birth of subcultures and the 1960s! Our film season takes in the angry young men of the '50s, how their rebellion against the shackles of their parents' lives saw the start of the Mod movement, and ends in swinging London in the 1960s. Directed by Tony Richardson and adapted by Allan Sillitoe from his own short story, the film follows rebellious youth Colin Smith (Courtenay) who is sentenced to a borstal after robbing a bakery.Showing a talent for long-distance running, Colin attracts the attention of the school Governor - and gains special privileges for being in his favour. But Colin struggles to square his working class background with the casual cruelty he sees from the upper-class, leading to a gut-wrenching act of rebellion.
