Shakespeare’s The Tempest - Prospero - The Tempest - BBC

The audience may also have seen Prospero as a type of magus - an educated man who studied science and was believed to gain magical powers through their studies. A magus could use their powers for good or might be tempted to use dark magic. Ariel, Prospero’s spirit servant, reports that the ship’s passengers have safely landed on different parts of the island. Ferdinand has been left alone on the island. The boat has been hidden in a bay on the island and the sailors are asleep on board. In Act 5, Ferdinand and Alonso are both delighted to be reunited and to discover that the other is still alive. Ferdinand: ‘Though the seas threaten, they are merciful. / I have cursed them without cause.’ Alonso: ‘Now all the blessings / Of a glad father compass thee about’ (5:1) Prospero is the central character in The Tempest and all the action revolves around him. Using magic, he is able to control the movements and all the actions of the other characters, which allows him not only to be the central character but also the actual author of the plot of the play. How does Prospero change throughout The Tempest? I come / to answer thy best pleasure, be’t to fly / To swim, to dive into the fire, to ride / On the curled clouds, to thy strong bidding task / Ariel and all his quality’ (Ariel, 1:2) Critic Jessica Slights creates claims that although many declare that Miranda only reflects the image of an obedient and subservient woman; she argues Miranda's character is independent. Miranda's upbringing shapes her character and the view of the world around her. She is not confined to social constructs as she did not grow up within a conventional society. This leads Miranda to view the world without preconceived ideas. Prospero is the main guardian in her life, but she developed personality traits such as kind-heartedness that are, as many describe, distinct in comparison to Prospero’s. In addition, she challenged the rules of traditional courtship when she pursued Ferdinand.

Meanwhile Caliban’s crazies are all off to kill Prospero, so Ariel distracts them with magical clothes and then chases them away with spirit dogs. And at last Prospero reveals himself and gives his bro Antonio and King Alonso a big telling off, then forgives them. In some ways, Miranda matches these expectations. She is kind and generally does what her father tells her to do. When Prospero doesn’t want Miranda to see or hear something, he simply uses his magic powers to send her to sleep. In Act 5, Prospero forgives Antonio for everything he has done. Antonio has no lines expressing how he feels about seeing Prospero again. ‘I do forgive thee / Unnatural though thou art’ (Prospero, 5:1)In the mobile game Star Trek Timelines a character was released in February 2017 called Prospero Data, recalling the character's appearance in the previously mentioned Star Trek: The Next Generation episode. At the end of the play, Prospero intends to drown his books and renounce magic. In the view of the audience, this may have been required to make the ending unambiguously happy, as magic was associated with diabolical works. Prospero is a magician and the rightful Duke of Milan who has been banished to an island with his daughter, Miranda. With the king asleep, Antonio persuades Sebastian that this is a good opportunity to kill him. They think Ferdinand has drowned in the storm, which would make Sebastian, as the king’s brother, next in line to take the throne. Prospero controls Ariel and Caliban. He is protective of his daughter Miranda and tries to control her actions on the island. He even uses magic to send Miranda to sleep at the start of the play, to prevent her asking any more questions about their past. He also controls the relationship between Miranda and Ferdinand. Her last appearance is in the play's final scene. After Prospero reveals himself to the assembled crowd he reveals the happy couple engaged in a game of chess. Miranda is teasing Ferdinand for cheating but admits that even if he is dishonest, she's more than happy to believe it for the love she bears for him.
