The Practical Magic series by Alice Hoffman is a good book series for readers who enjoy literary fiction, character-driven novels, and/or epic family sagas, as well as books with a hint of magic.

I started it the minute I got it but made myself wait until Halloween to finish the book because I wanted to enjoy the book to the fullest. And move it does — though for the first 100 or so pages, readers get bogged down in detailed, sometimes confusing, back stories of a sprawling cast of characters. For the final scene with all of the townspeople at the Owens home, the entire population of the town where filming took place was invited to show up in costume and appear as townsfolk.
