The Stand Up Elevated Edition is a great sounding box set that features what some, including myself, feel is Tull's best album. Having listened to some of the other Tull “book” editions, I feel that Stand Up is better than anything else they ever released, including Aqualung. It’s a shame they could never match the quality of Stand Up. Now comes Analogue Productions’ 180-gram double 45 RPM reissue sourced from the original Island master tapes sent over from the U.K.

It begins with a tramp sitting on a park bench ‘watching as the frilly panties run’ and ends with a meditation on the nature of God – Tull in a nutshell, really. Aqualung is high on ambition and sardonic rage. The first half introduces Aqualung the tramp, ‘eying little girls with bad intent’ and Cross-Eyed Mary, the good-time girl who ‘will do it for a song’. Both are archetypes that Anderson would return to again and again.

Now with their 45 RPM release, plated at QRP and pressed at RTI, the best-sounding version of this historic album gives listeners an even richer sonic experience. The recording sessions for this album started in April ’69. One month later, the band scored their first U.K. hit with “Living In The Past,” which charted at #3 (included in the remastered release).. Starting with “Stand Up,” the band’s use of dynamics, Celtic Folk, and classically-oriented tonal structures, along with Ian Anderson’s flute playing and songwriting, became Jethro Tull’s signature. Simply put, “Stand Up” was the genesis of Tull’s sound and, not surprisingly, is one of Anderson’s favorite Tull records. Only one song doesn't quite fall in either of the aforementioned categories: We Used To Know, the album’s most melodic and mournful tune. Wistful and nostalgic, it is one of Anderson’s finest folk songs, and features the singer’s best performance thus far, along with two majestic, electrifying guitar solos courtesy of “Le Barre”. On a historical note, The Eagles liked this song so much that they would record a (largely inferior) cover of it, changing the title to Hotel California.
