About this deal

Reserving a card is also the only way to get a gold token (joker). If there is no gold left, you can still reserve a card, but you won’t get any gold. You don’t mind learning a few additional rules, this is mainly because you will have to learn the benefits that each of the new cards offer The noble cards are shuffled and one card is removed for each player, another card is added and placed over the topmost row. (For 4 players, 5 cards are placed). Splendor Rules and Game Guide On How To Play

An expansion of the game, Cities of Splendor, was released in 2017, including four modules (The Cities, The Trading Posts, The Orient, The Strongholds). The Opinionated Gamers gave a positive review, describing the changes as subtle and varied. [8] The overall concept is simple: the first player at 15 points or above initiates the “end of game phase.” Every player gets the same amount of turns so the round is finished up and whoever has the most points wins. This does mean that if the first player to go gets 15 points in a 4-player game, the other players get their last turn and can result in one of them getting more points and winning the game. When collecting gems it’s worth paying attention to what your opponents are doing. Sometimes when there isn’t an obvious card to grab or you’re short on gems to choose from, hoarding one color of gem or grabbing a card someone else wants can be a great way to throw a wrench in their plans while you wait for better cards to flip up. Be Careful with How You Reserve Development Cards Think about it: a 2-2-1 card costs five gems and gives you one card. For the price of just one more gem you can have two cards in many cases. Also, two expensive 2-2-1 cards in a row can decimate your gems causing you to take 2-3 turns to rebuild while your opponents are chaining together moves. In a turn, if eligible for multiple Nobles, the player can only choose to own 1 noble. Owning a noble is not the part of a turn, a player still gets to play one of the above-mentioned options. Scoring Points and Winning The Game

Level one cards might give you a single use two gold (wild) option or a bonus Gem to one you already have. Level two cards will give you cards which are worth two Gems or even reserve a Noble. Level three cards will you go for a free level two card or maybe discard one from the game to gain three prestige. Take two gem tokens of the same color from the pool (provided, before the turn, there are at least four tokens left of that color). There's remarkable amount of substance to Splendor considering it consists of three small piles of cards and some poker chips. And yet each turn is quite simple: you take some poker chips, or you take a card. And between turns, you think about what you're going to do next turn, and then swear at the person who buys the card you want before you get the chance.

The player who then has the highest number of prestige points is declared the winner (don’t forget to count your nobles). Splendor encourages the use of cunning strategies and devious moves and this creates a game that plays wonderfully well. The colourful and detailed artwork makes this a must-have for any board game collection and will have players wanting to play again and again. Don’t be afraid to reserve cards – it can sometimes feel like a wasted turn, but by reserving a card that is crucial to your plan, you not only guarantee that no one else can buy it, you also get to grab a ‘wild’ gold token (as long as one is available), which can come in very handy. In 2020, Splendor: Marvel was released, a re-themed version of the game based on characters from Marvel Comics, notably revolving around the Infinity Gauntlet storyline where Thanos attempts to collect the Infinity Gems. [10]Finally I should note that the box is oddly very big for the components inside. I’m guessing it was due to a cost saving measure, but the box could have easily been half the size it is. How to Play:

privilege scrolls go next to the board, 4 Royals go face up under the board, and then choose first player in the way you do. Whoever goes 2nd gets a privilege scroll to start the game. There’s also a victory tile that reminds you of the 3 ways in which you can claim victory, so best keep that in eyeline. With 3 players: 2 tokens of each gem color except gold are removed (there should be only 5 of each remaining). The recommended age of 10+ seems like a good guideline, though we expect that a lot of younger kids would be able to understand the game (and there's no text at all, the whole game is symbol based, basically), but the theme is fairly dry, so it will just depend on whether you think they'll engage with it. The development and noble cards have a number written on the top-left corner called the prestige point. Gem Tokens (Total = 40)

The 5 gem tokens include diamonds, emerald, sapphire, ruby, and onyx. They are each 7 in number and look like poker chips. I think that most veteran gamers will enjoy the first few players of Splendor, but then it will probably be regulated to the shelf, only to be brought out when your non-gamer friends come around or when you are looking for a game you can easily jump into. As a family game, or something to play with your friends who still bust out catchphrase when you come over, it’s a fantastic choice. Its accessible nature makes it an easy play and learn. But for your gamer friends, Splendor will at best be a filler game. Final Thoughts: Zimmerman, Aaron; Anderson, Nate; Mendelsohn, Tom (8 December 2017).
