On June 19, 1987 at the Fishing Boat Inn in Northumberland, shooter Tab Hunter (no, not the movie star!) recorded a brilliant 23 dart 1001 leg: 100-180-140-125-140-100-140-76. He averaged a fine 43.5 points per dart, ending the final 76 in two. They carry them about in hand- fashioned special cases, presentation darts, ordinary darts, sets with Jim Pike barrels, fat barrels, thin barrels, long barrels. In plastic, in metal, in wood. The News of the World was the first nationally televised darts event as ITV broadcast the latter stages of the championship from 1972 to 1985, and again in 1987 and 1988. The 1986 event was not broadcast due to a technicians' strike. It is well documented that the game was popular with sailors who would use a section off an old mast as a target. A continental board has been developed recently which has a mesh surface and the scores are registered automatically. But this has not found favour with the English players.But if Harry talks blithely about the rewards of the game they are certainly not achieved without some sweat and strain. Darts is never a placid affair when the moneys on. When the stakes are in three figures they all sweat. And Harry is no exception, although undoubtedly he keeps his considerable cool by following what he calls his "technique" or approach to the game. There were around 1,000 entries in the first event, which was held in the Metropolitan area of London. The tournament then began to expand around the different counties in England. By 1938/39 there were six different regional events – London& South England, Wales, Lancashire& Cheshire, Yorkshire, the North of England and the Midland Counties. [2] There are more pubs with dartboards in the centre of New York than there are in the centre of London. The latest donation came from the Auew Club in West Regent Street in the city centre. Last night they held a "Pro-Am" darts tournament involving club members and Rangers and Celtic footballers. By the end of world war two the game was firmly established with a large proportion of pubs having teams throughout the country. Competitions with substantial prizes started to be run with the News Of The World competition in 1927 being the first really big one. This was only open to London residents at first but rapidly opened up to the whole country drawing large numbers of competitors. It was not until 1973 when Ollie Croft formed the British Darts Organisation that the next stage of development occurred.
