Maverick's 4K Blu-ray also enjoys an equally reference Dolby Atmos track that implements 3D object-orientated HD surround sound design to somehow - almost impossibly - marry up to the visuals in terms of presentation perfection.

Spot on imaging and channel separation draw out both large and small sounds and allow their directional correlation based upon the onscreen events to be definable within the room’s acoustic boundaries. If anyone is going to compare this with Godzilla V Kong or Fury Road or Midway then they will come out disappointed. Unexpected, spectacular and surprisingly poignant, Joseph Kosinski's Top Gun: Maverick delivers to audiences something we didn't know we wanted, a genuinely heartfelt sequel to Tony Scott's 1986 action drama while simultaneously reminding us of the breathtaking joy of watching practical effects and real-life white-knuckle action sequences. Why it has a screenplay nomination is well beyond me though, and no cinematography or director consideration leaves me more bamboozled than winning Best Picture honestly. Others have taken pains to highlight the original film’s “obvious homo-erotic overtones” (and you can almost hear the smirk they wore while typing those words).Once defined by the very vehicle that made him famous, and that saw him playing iterations of the same character across a number of popular productions (most obviously taking to the race tracks for Days of Thunder), it's impressive that he came back to the Top Gun series to define it.

With this move to neuter said bass because of sound bars and TV speakers, you have the same issue as with subwoofers. One sensitive mod banned me for a month in 2022 and even deleted my the post in Oscars 2022 thread without owing me any explanation for simply saying "Welcome to Holly-w***". Of course, I would love to have one for myself but it could happen maybe in 10 years when I am closer to 60.

The in-plane footage is equally amazing for very different reasons, with less of a stylised approach it's impressive really in that it manages to effortlessly balance what - at first glance - appears to be almost razor-sharp documentary footage, with an acute cinematic eye, to yield something utterly immersive. The disc image wise is reference quality for sure, but the audio is a huge missed opportunity in my opinion. The fact that the actors were actually riding in the back seats of F/A-18 Super Hornets being flown by Naval Aviators, had to operate six IMAX cameras installed on the instrument panel and were pulling some serious G forces is beyond impressive.

The cinematography makes frequent use of shadows, cascading/streaming light and a blend of light/dark elements. Top Gun: Leading a phenomenal cast including Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins, Tom Cruise soars as Maverick, the young, in-your-face U.the film with the speed, scale, access, intricacy, and intimacy of the aerial maneuvers and photography. Take your pick, the sequences at Top Gun is San Diego, inside Penny’s Bar or in the air, look terrific, delivering the goods with eye catching goodness that put a smile on my face. It didn't make that much difference to me because my sub wasn't powerful enough to overcome my listening volume being well below reference.
