About this deal

I think this ratio is a good compromise for a lightweight jacket, but when stationary it is really only just enough (if that, sometimes). Montane are committed to reducing their environmental impact and to being transparent with consumers as this journey continues. So ensuring you have a technical waterproof to protect against the heaviest downpours is essential for your comfort. Summary: Though the three jackets are a similar weight I feel (marginally) warmest and best protected from the elements in the Fitzroy, with its long-ish cut, extra front insulation and robust weather-shedding outer fabric.

Though I've not yet managed to poke a hole in any of the jackets the Fitzroy feels like it has the most robust fabric, and it's the one I'd choose on a wet day too. Personally I'd probably not consider a climbing layer with more than 60g of insulation (I've climbed in my Patagucci Nano Puff a few times and it's been great) and I'd take a 100g jacket as being in light to moderate belay jacket territory so low pockets and huge internal pockets make sense to me. All the pocket zips are that same chunky robust design as the main zipper, and though they lack anti-snag strips I've so far failed to find this a problem. The roomy wired hood kept the worst at bay, and the long cuffs helped me retain feeling in my hands. I'd consider all of these to be belay jackets - way too warm to climb in usually - so they're going on over your harness anyway. The only downside is that the Buffalo is a smock type, so has to be dragged over your head, but I’ve never had any issues taking it off when I’ve stopped at a pub during a winter walk.

Designed to be worn on the go in a range of conditions, these midweight synthetic insulated jackets are each a good breathable choice for hillwalkers, climbers and mountaineers, says John McKenna. So as an insulating/waterproof jacket, it's designed to fit pretty snug and close to your body but has enough wiggle room under it for an extra layer on those really chilly days.

Is there some classic Paramo that people mean when they just say “Paramo”, as seems to be often done? Someone recommended the OMM Barrage but the waterproof outer is their superlight race one, I doubt it’d last many years on casual use. More heavily-insulated synthetic jackets are available, but the three lightly-stuffed models reviewed here strike a good balance between warmth, weight and packability, and they can be worn on the go as well as when stationary. Unzip below the chin and movement is much eased; fine unless the weather's really foul (that's quite a lot of the time, though). The sleeve cuffs are cut on a slight diagonal; if this is supposed to help keep the back of the wrists covered when the cuffs are tightened then it seems to work. This size chart features leg length measurements that increase in length as the waist size increases. Not sure about the pile lining, does that make it bulky and is it going to pull up my sweatshirt sleeves every time I put it on. Lower impact materials have a reduced environmental footprint and increased traceability via third party accreditations.
