About this deal

As the story continued we found out more about Max and the rest of the family, from the perspective of Frank. The family seem to be faced with many challenges but then they are hit with a heartbreaking tragedy, provoking questions about how Frank, Max and their dad will cope with the devastating loss of their mum. This part of the story is actually quite unexpected, but it is revealed how Frank’s mum hid her illness from her children as “they had enough on their plate”- this is a really heartbreaking part of the story. I think the story is most powerful due to it being written from the perspective of Frank in this instance. There were other factors involved too. "Eisenhower's chief problem during this period was which branch of the military would be responsible for developing a launch vehicle," according to Odom, "however, this was problematic because it put the various branches in competition with each other. Eisenhower was really trying to disentangle all the military branches from being in competition with each other and move space exploration into a government agency dedicated to peaceful, open communication."

Kennedy's speech followed an earlier one made to Congress on May 25, 1961, following Yuri Gagarin's successful spaceflight, according to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Shortly after this speech, NASA's budget would increase by 89% and its research would now have one clear long-term aim in mind - though there would be other victories and developments in the short term. Rich and strange (and kitted out with an eye-catching cover), but stronger in the set pieces than the internal logic. Whenever a new author debuts on the children's literature scene, I always approach their work with a measure of excitement and caution. It is yet another publishing cog whose teeth are just set to roll along the mainstream line or has a publisher taken a leap of faith and presented us with a unique and engaging voice? I can assure you that Balen's debut stands firmly in the latter. Image showing the damaged Apollo 1 spacecraft following the flash fire that killed all astronauts onboard during a simulated launch (Image credit: Getty: Heritage Images / Contributor) On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 launched from the Kennedy space center. Four days later, at 10.56 PM EDT on July 20, Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. Although conspiracy theories persist that the moon landing was a hoax, more than half a billion people watched the historic event, which was broadcast on television.January 1958: The US enter the space race by launching Explorer 1, the first US satellite to reach orbit. It carried experimental equipment that led to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belt. August 1959: The US launches Explorer 6, the world's first weather satellite and obtains the first pictures of Earth from space. Now, some believe that a new space race has begun with the United States pitted against superpowers such as China and India, as well as old rival Russia. But some criticize this notion.

The Earth is now surrounded by a network of satellites, which provide broadband communications and high-definition television, data used for weather reporting and GPS navigation and positioning. Many of these tools and systems were created and developed during the space race. Medical Frank also has a strong relationship with his friends Ahmed and Jamie. They have a special wilderness spot they ride their bikes to and it is the perfect escape for Frank. In the woods they tear off their shirts, rub mud on their faces, swing on ropes, build a den, chase each other with chunks of mud, howl like wolves, and laugh and laugh and laugh! Before they leave they always scratch ” 23 9 12 4″ (wild) into the earth and their initials, 10 (Jamie) 6 (Frank) and 1 (Ahmed). April 1961: The Soviet Union achieve a clear triumph in the space race. Aboard the Vostok 1, Yuri Gagarin makes a single orbit around the Earth and becomes the first man to reach space. He remained in space for one hour and forty-eight minutes before landing in Saratov Oblast, west Russia.

Following the Second World War in 1946, tensions rose between two of the victors; the Soviet Union (USSR) and the United States (US) The primary source of conflict arose from the struggle between two political beliefs of communism (USSR) and capitalism (US). This conflict became known as the Cold War. November 1957: The USSR successfully launches Sputnik 2, carrying a dog named Laika into space. They become the first nation to successfully send a living organism into orbit. Tom Wolfe at his very best" (The New York Times Book Review), The Right Stuff is the basis for the 1983 Oscar Award-winning film of the same name and the 8-part Disney+ TV mini-series. This novel focuses on ten-year-old Frank. He loves his family but everything got a bit more difficult with the birth of now five-year-old Max. Max is on the autistic spectrum and dislikes change, colourful foods, and anything which isn't his favourite t-shirt. His birth sparked the end of his mother's career as an artist and any quiet that occurred inside their home. Laura Carlin's monochrome illustrations combine artistic skill with a childlike element that complements the text - Books for Keeps
