About this deal

A 15-minute drive from the gorgeous hill town of Ostuni is a long stretch of white sand beaches that are part of the Parco Naturale Regionale Dune Costiere (Coastal Dunes Regional Natural Park). It was to take advantage of this coastline and some of the best beaches in Puglia that we had chosen to base ourselves in Gallipoli for two nights - we would recommend this town to anyone looking for a base for day trips on the western and south western coast. You are never too far from one of the coasts. The Ionian Coast is flatter with shallow turquoise sea and the best sandy beaches in Puglia. On our last full day in Puglia, we took full advantage of having our own car and hit the cacti-filled countryside and to wander around some of the prettiest towns in all of Italy.

Bari Province. A trip from Foggia to Bari takes about an hour on the train. The line passes one of our favorite off-season fishing villages Giovinazzo, as well as the pretty and interesting Trani, where you should go if you like a place with a castle and a romanesque cathedral right on the sea. How to travel from Foggia to Bari From there, the sight of the conical white-tipped trulli roofs and rustic stone walls against the lush rolling hills and green fields is mesmeric. Be sure to view it at dusk, when the descending sun illuminates the scene with spectacular hues of orange, red and pink.

The picture on the left above shows a specialty bread being made with dough, olive oil, and whatever vegetables are in season. It's a favorite of everyone who takes a cooking class at Masseria Provenzani just north of Lecce. Events

Puglia is rich in cultural layers laid down by passers-by through the centuries. First the tribal Messpii speaking Messapian, then Mycenaean Greeks. Ancient Greeks arrived by the 8th century BC around Taranto, and there still exists a cluster of small towns in southern Puglia called the Grecia Salentina in which a dialect of Greek is spoken and still taught in schools. Essentially though, the timing worked, the accommodation we selected was great, and we came away with a deep appreciation of this part of Italy. Each is an essential addition to any Puglia itinerary, whilst nearby Cisternino is also definitely worth including (we didn’t make it here on our first trip to the region but made a point of visiting on the second - it’s beautiful!) If you’ve never rented a car before, we highly recommend your read this post before you fly to Italy - 9 Essential Car Rental Tips for Travellers - which will save you money, reduce stress, and help you avoid scams and hidden fees. Lido Pizzo takes up about half of the beach, but don’t expect to get a sun lounger. Season passes seem popular here because it was fully booked for all of August, despite most of the chairs being empty.Known as Apulia to non-Italians, many fall in love with it since it’s unlike most of the rest of the country. The landscape ranges from beautiful beaches (on 500 miles of coast along two seas) to vineyards and olive groves inland. Vegetable growing ( lettuce, artichoke, fennel, cabbage, celery, barattiere, borage, sweet potato, caper, portulaca) and horticulture ( kiwis, peaches, orange, clementine, lemon) are also developed. In the Gargano, visit the old cities of Monte Sant'Angelo, Lucera, Manfredonia, and San Severo, and the Padre Pio sanctuary of San Giovanni Rotondo. Vieste is near to the Foresta Umbra national park and is the holiday capital of the Gargano. With golden sand, clear shallow water, and sandy dunes, this is one of the best beaches near Ostuni.

If you'd like to live like an Italian, even if only for a few days, Pizzicato Eco B&B in Vico del Gargano, is a fine choice. The mastermind behind the operation is Giuseppe Romondia, who speaks English fluently and will attend quite nicely to your needs. The idea is a sort of "holiday vacation homes and apartments diffuso," places to stay spread out over the city and centered around the best bar in Puglia, the Pizzicato. The "Eco" in the name refers to the biological produce produced by the family farm, which isn't too far from Vico's public beach. Highly recommended. This Puglia Train Travel Times Map shows times for some typical rail journeys around Puglia. The lines in red represent the faster and more expensive Eurostar Italia trains. Lecce is blessed with a soft limestone so easy to work that Lecce became the center for ornate architectural ornamentation, called the barocco leccese, or Leccese Baroque. Lecce is a great town to walk around in, and it has several fine restaurants. You can enjoy your glass of excellent wine and admire hilly landscape! Castel del Monte - a mysterious place We planned our route to go via Produttori Vini Manduria, a winery where you can fill up bottles by the gallon from petrol pumps. It was a really nice countryside drive, but we made the mistake of arriving literally one minute after closing time on a Sunday (remember that Sundays are still pretty sacred in Italy)!

Trulli country starts in Alberobello, where there are more than 1500 of the quirky conical houses. You can stay in a trulli hotel, or rent a trullo house for a week to get the feel for this interesting part of Puglia. Locorotundo and Martina Franca are also interesting cities to visit. We spent the day at Torre Lapillo, a 4km stretch of soft white sand between the towers of Torre Chianca and Torre Lapillo.

In May, you’ll find long stretches of empty sand, whereas in August, the same stretch will be unrecognisable covered in sun loungers and umbrellas. In Taranto, there is the largest metallurgical work ILVA Acciaierie di Taranto (8,200 empl.) in Europe with a full iron and steel production cycle. It will be sold to Arcelor Mittal. [20]
