About this deal

Murder in the Rue Dumas” is more on the cozy end of the genre, but what a delightful place it holds. With a focus on people rather than buildings, history is unravelled through anecdotes with lots of suggestions of what to see when you visit. Longworth evokes the pleasures of France in delicious detail—great wine, delicious meals, and fine company. Several characters describe her as beautiful, and a great deal of energy is spent making sure we know she's good looking. In het eerste hoofdstuk is te lezen dat Yann en Thierry, twee goede vrienden, op weg zijn een feestje.

When Longworth debuted her charming mystery series featuring the crime-solving duo of Judge Antoine Verlaque and his on-again, off-again girlfriend, law professor Marine Bonnet, she won rave reviews. Daarnaast ontdekken ze dat hij naast zijn werk nog een andere passie had, die een extra onderzoekslijn oplevert.

Despite mysteries not being my favorite genre, I read this one right on the heels of the prequel to Luther. Moutte’s soon-to-be retirement has become a permanent one, hastened by blows to his head delivered by a blunt instrument. Marine Bonnet, a well respected law professor, pairs her extensive knowledge with his investigative skills once again to solve several murders centered in the university's theology department. The main characters are engaging and likeable and I particularly enjoyed the interactions between two of the graduate students, Yann Falquero and Thierry Marchive.

However, what I won't overlook and this annoyed me big time, is that the (laughably tiny) faculty doesn't include a single member of the clergy. We know their background—well, for most of them—their lives, their relationships and personal passions; Bruno’s love of opera and Verlaque’s cigars. Once again, I was completely delighted by the characters and the setting without even really caring about the mystery. Georges Moette, director of theology at the Université d'Aix--a very unpopular fellow with plenty of enemies. But I'm so charmed by the culture of this French town and the characters who populate it, that I wouldn't care if it was a mystery, a romance, or a 700-page diary entry on what these people ate and drank all day.
