David Tanner column: Scottish Cup final and Brendan Rodgers' arrival at Celtic, Sky Sports, 16 May 2016 The semi final paired Hibs with Aberdeen, a strong going side captained by former Hibs stalwart Davie Shaw. The first leg at Pittodrie, which Gordon missed due to a hamstring injury, saw the Dons sweep to a 4-1 win and on the train home Gordon asked that he be allowed to play in the second leg in which he inspired Hibs to a 4-0 lead only for a last gasp strike by Yorston for the Dons to force a replay. Ibrox was the venue and the game finished at 1-1 so the teams met again just 24 hours later at Hampden and this time Smith had the pleasure of playing in a team which won 5-1. Sadly Hibs lost in the Final to Motherwell whilst in the Scottish Cup it would be Motherwell again that halted Hibs when they won a thrilling game 3-2 at Tynecastle. My personal Hibs Hero. Along with Lawrie a toss-up for the best Hibs striker of them all. Joe was world-class, make no mistake. Lightening-fast, a cannonball shot with both feet and a superb header of the ball in spite of his modest height. A feisty attitude on the pitch also made this man the complete centre-forward. A great man off the pitch to boot.

Hibs have a traditional local rivalry in Edinburgh with Hearts; the derby match between the two clubs is one of the oldest rivalries in world football. [121] Graham Spiers has described it as "one of the jewels of the Scottish game". [9] The clubs first met on Christmas Day 1875, when Hearts won 1–0 in the first match ever contested by Hibs. The two clubs became distinguished in Edinburgh after a five-game struggle for the Edinburgh Football Association Cup in 1878, which Hearts finally won with a 3–2 victory after four successive draws. [122] The clubs have met each other in two Scottish Cup finals, in 1896 and 2012, both of which were won by Hearts. [123] The 1896 match is also notable for being the only Scottish Cup Final to be played outside Glasgow. [123] In the quarter-finals Hibs met Djurgaarden, winning 3–1 at home and losing to a single goal 'away'. The Scandinavian team's pitch was frozen so they played their home match at Firhill in Glasgow. The night of Hibs' win Celtic were playing across the city and the Parkhead programme notes stated: "Already interest in these floodlit evening games is on the wane."

Hibs wore green and white hooped shirts during the 1870s, [94] which was the inspiration for the style later adopted by Celtic. [98] Hibs then wore all-green shirts from 1879 until 1938, when white sleeves were added to the shirts. [94] This was similar in style to Arsenal, who had added white sleeves to their red shirts earlier in the 1930s. [99] The colour of the shorts was changed to a green which matched the shirts in 2004, to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of a friendly win in October 1964 against Real Madrid. [100] Green shorts were used in that match to avoid a colour clash with the all-white colours of Real Madrid. Hibs also used green shorts in the 2006–07, 2007–08 and 2008–09 seasons. [94] For the 2012–13 season, Hibs changed the primary colour of the shirts to a darker "bottle" green, instead of the normal emerald green. [101] A darker green had been used until the 1930s. [101] For the 2014–15 season, Hibs removed the traditional white sleeves from their home kit, as they changed to a darker green shirt in commemoration of the Famous Five forward line. [102] During his playing career, Gordon Smith was capped 19 times by Scotland, scoring four goals. Smith was compared with his English contemporaries Stanley Matthews and Tom Finney, [2] [6] but he did not appear to have a "big-match temperament". [2] Smith had to compete for selection with Rangers winger Willie Waddell, who was capped 17 times in the same period. [2] [4] In addition to his appearances for the national team, Smith appeared 11 times for the Scottish League XI. Season 1951/52 saw another League Title and it was in September 1952 that many fans who witnessed the exploits of the Five suggested they saw them play their best game ever when, in Gordon’s Testimonial against English Champions Manchester United, the Hibs triumphed 7-3 with Turnbull (3), Reilly (2), Ormond and Gordon himself hitting the target. The second leg against Reims at Easter Road was attended by 45,000 spectators. Sadly Hibs were defeated by a Reims side inspired by the great French footballer Raymond Kopa. Gordon Smith (25 May 1924 – 7 August 2004) was a Scottish footballer. He is the only player to have won a Scottish league championship with three clubs: Hibernian, Heart of Midlothian, and Dundee. Smith also represented Scotland and the Scottish League XI. Arthur Duncan Played across three decades for the club on his way to setting a record for appearances.
