Named for the year it was casked, Angostura 1919® is a light golden rum aged in charred, used bourbon oak casks and distilled in Angostura’s multi-column continuous still.The Angostura house is located on a 20-acre complex, in the heart of the Caribbean, off the coast of Venezuela, on the island of Trinidad, so renowned for the joie de vivre and sense of celebration of its inhabitants. Unfortunately, I found there was a rather unpleasant 'antiseptic' flavour that lingered well into the 'finish'. A wonderfully smooth and silky rum from Trinidad and Tobago's famed Angostura company, it's aged for at least 8 years in bourbon barrels. It was produced using the unique blending techniques developed by the Fernandes family in the 1800’s, the same blend which was salvaged from charred casks from the fire in 1932.

Siegert sons relocated the company to its present home in Trinidad in the 1870’s and the company rebranded from ‘Dr. Notes of prune subtly mingle with caramel and woody spices, creating a rich and unforgettable taste experience. This exquisite rum is aged for 8 years in small oak barrels, resulting in a smooth and well-rounded taste. The name 1919 is also a tribute to a bit of Trinidadian rum history – following a catastrophic fire at its government rum bond in 1932, hundreds of rather charred casks of the Fernandes family blended rum that had been filled in 1919 were salvaged from the ashes, resulting in an unrepeatable batch that is reported to have been exquisite! I do not do cocktails and only sip my rums neat, so have to say that in my opinion, this is not a good sipping rum.
