The Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA) is a single exam assessed using a computer-based system. It is to be taken by individuals in their recruitment year who are applying into the following postgraduate medical training: General Practice, Surgery, Psychiatry, Radiology, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Community and Sexual Reproductive Health, and Neurosurgery. Pearson VUE provides a generic tutorial which gives you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the controls and screen layout of the exam – useful so you know what to expect when it comes to the exam, so no time is wasted trying to figure these out. The more practice questions you do, the more chance you have of scoring a higher score, it’s that simple. In general, it is recommended that candidates take the MSRA exam as early as possible to maximize their chances of success and to ensure that they have ample time to apply for the specialty program they are interested in. Why Do People Fail The MSRA? The scenarios are based across an array of settings that F2 doctors might be in, for example, hospital wards, general practices and out-of-hours clinics. For both the PD and CPS sections the candidate will be given a standardised score that comes under a specific band (1-4). Scoring over 291 in the exam puts the candidate in Band 4, illustrating a ‘very good level of performance’ in the exam. Additionally, 181-230 is Band 2, representing a ‘below average performance’ and 231-290 puts the candidate in Band 3 or a ‘good level of performance’ in the exam. What specialties need MSRA? In 2016 the GP ST Stage 2 resource was renamed the Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA). It is now also used for doctors applying to other specialties such as radiology, psychiatry, obstetrics/gynaecology, neurosurgery and ophthalmology. In the CPS part of the assessment, candidates are presented with clinical scenarios that require them to exercise judgement and problem solving skills to determine appropriate diagnosis and management of patients. Professional Dilemmas Paper The Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA) is a single computer-based exam comprising a Professional Dilemmas (PD) paper and a Clinical Problem Solving (CPS) paper. It is intended to assess candidates with a foundation level of competence. Raw shortlisting score and MSRA are scaled to produce a combined shortlisting score. Combined shortlisting/MSRA score will be used to rank applicants and fill interview capacity. After candidates have filled in their application for GP specialty training, and the deadline for application submission has passed, they are provided details to register with Pearson VUE. Applications are assessed using the criteria listed in the General Practice – ST1 Person Specification. Subsequently, longlisted candidates are invited to sit the MSRA. Candidates must book a test for their preferred centre, date, and time by logging onto their Pearson VUE account.A is a poor option as it potentially breaches patient confidentiality and may cause distress to the patient and relative. Aim to complete two to three months of revision supplemented with an online question bank for the clinical problem-solving section – try to complete the question bank at least once EMQs require the candidate to select the most appropriate answer(s) from a list of options for a given scenario. Each EMQ typically includes a stem and a number of related options. The stem may describe a clinical scenario, a diagnostic test result, or a piece of clinical data.
