About this deal

We’re very happy with the reception of El Bandarra so far – both the trade and consumers have loved both our liquid and our activations. My brothers Albert and Jordi and a great team of genuine folk. Albert, who is my twin, leads the creative direction of the brand and Jordi is the guardian of our winery. We have no plans for any additional launches in the coming years, as we want to consolidate our business and growth with our current range, and with our Bandarra Al Fresco aperitivo especially.

El Bandarra is more than a drink: it is an attitude, so you know: a terrace hustle and bustle and good vibes! We show up in the story in 2014. We had just started out working at the family winery when the aperitif phenomenon was reborn from the ashes. So we asked our father, “Why don’t we make one?” to which he answered, “are you dumb? We’ve been making aperitif for 40 years.” We tasted it and went nuts. It was brilliant! It just needed a little “zhooshing up”. So we mixed that spirit with our grandfather’s know-how, bottled it in the classic soda bottle and painted it as per the old-time bars. A Bandarra is the first to arrive at the party and the last to leave and they definitely always have a story to tell! The nature of the aperitivo category and the taste profile of Bandarra leans towards the 35-55 consumer but we have seen an increase in the 25-35 consumer database over the last year. The category is growing and so it’s an exciting time to be activating the brand in the on-trade. With his brothers, Albert and Jordi, Alex Virgili is determined to make their Barcelona-based El Bandarra a leader in the areas of both vermouth and the spritz, as Douglas Blyde discovers… The spritz category is “premiumising” and growing. El Bandarra is the clear alternative to mainstream aperitifs. We decided to create Aperitivo Week as the aperitivo moment is huge in Spain and we wanted to share this with the UK.verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ How will the UK react to El Bandarra in your anticipation, and what sort of drinkers are we islanders? We can’t help but love a good party. If there’s hustle and bustle, we’re there. And our aperitif had to be just like us. “BANDARRA” is that fun and unapologetic friend that can party all night long by your side – and you’ll still find him the next day at an aperitif meeting. El Bandarra has three vermouths and one aperitivo: El Bandarra Rojo, Blanco and Rosé vermouths are best consumed in a traditional Spanish way, over ice, a slice of orange, lemon and an olive. El Bandarra Al Fresco is our aperitivo created to be mixed. Our key serve is the Bandarra Spritz (one part Al Fresco, one part Cava, soda and a slice of grapefruit) and it can also be enjoyed with tonic for a lower ABV spritz alternative.

It was the good old 60s when our grandfather, Fermin and his brother bought a 100-year-old winery on the outskirts of Barcelona. Hand in hand, they made the wine, sold it by the barrel to local bars and wine shops… And of course, drank it. That’s why Fermín, who knew his fair share about drinks, set about creating vermouth, by mixing Xarel·lo wines with more than 50 botanicals. And with that, he found the magic potion that would become our flagship product in Spain, El Bandarra Rojo!
