About this deal

I would recommend, if you can, getting the back issues as it is fun to read the story and also see the ads and “what’s happening” of that era. Jason comes off as every bit the twerp he was when folks voted with their telephones back in the 80's, but the pairing gives Dick a chance to be both outraged ousted party and cool big brother; by the end, we're as in awe of the newly minted Nightwing as Jason is. The story is also narrated by Dick Grayson, as if he's talking to Batman, giving us key insight on his understanding of the Dark Knight's way of life, himself, and how the world around him works. While my boy Wally West made history by being the first sidekick to graduate into the role of full hero, years earlier Dick Grayson was the first junior partner in comic book history to really escape his mentor's shadow (which makes sense given that he was the first junior partner period).

Fully recommend for fans of Dixon and Beatty's previous work, Nightwing readers and any Batman readers looking to round out the story like I was.I can understand the reasons behind it, but, as mentioned earlier, his partnership (and tensions within the partnership) should have been fleshed out. Dixon also introduces the narrative device of Dick writing all this as a letter to Batman, a nice little touch that helps pry further into his psyche. As if he had never left the character he helped to give such depth, Dixon gets right back in the swing of mixing the pathos of Dick Grayson in with the somersaults of Robin and provides a timeless yarn about growing up with a super-heroic edge. This leads to the realization he needs to find a place to "come home to" and, although he tries the circus, he turns instead to becoming a hero in his own right, comes back to Gotham and finds himself.

Anyways, I love the way Superman treats Dick Grayson as an equal even here, love the way Dick kinda hits on Lois Lane, and love about a zillion other things about those two characters teaming; just a great dynamic.

Donning a brand-new uniform, he takes a new name and charts a course that makes the Boy Wonder a man.I enjoy the use of color in the adventures, too — it’s bright overall, but still has that darkness since it is Bat-family book. This graphic novel is also a great way to introduce newcomers to the character since, in pop culture, Dick Grayson is still Robin for many people, despite the fact that there are at least four different people that have been Robin in the comics. This story exists in the post-Crisis and pre-New 52 world and tries to sandwich itself in-between a handful of issues of Batman and the seminal Judas Contract of New Teen Titans.

I think it would have been better if more time was taken to show the tensions between Bruce/Batman and Dick and flesh out his journey a bit more rather than breezing through and telling us a few details. There are several characters who have cameos throughout the story Lois Lanes questioning of Clark over how he knows Dick is brilliantly done and its nice to see characters in more innocent times especially Batgirl and Jason. His exploration of his roots in the circus and the pull that he can't deny to continue in the path in which Bruce has trained him make him an incredibly compelling hero. There are, of course, nice moments--we get more scenes of the mainly undefined Dick Grayson/Barbara Gordon relationship, as well as a new "first appearance" of Killer Croc--an origin reconned out of mainstream continuity when Jason Todd lost his first, circus-based origin after Crisis on Infinite Earths. In six issues, Chuck Dixon and Scott McDaniel not only fill in those gaps, but also address the larger part of Dick’s first year in his new identity, and for some, the fan favourite “disco suit”.Talking to Dick like he means nothing to him, shouting at him, humiliating him, betraying him, immediately replacing him behind his back and dressing him in Dicks own clothes. A lot of great Bat Family moments especially with Dick and Barbara, I love their dynamic in the early years of Gotham before the Bat Family got overwhelmingly larger.
