About this deal

A Condenser microphone will not be damaged if phantom power is not engaged, though it will not pass any signal without it. The Saffire 6 USB 1.1 requires a driver on both Mac and Windows systems, but it is no longer supported. Please see this article for more information. This voltage is commonly referred to as phantom power. Note that, even with phantom power on, the mic's signal will still need pre-amplification; the 48V supply is simply there to charge the condenser mic's capsule and power active electronic components. Ribbon Microphones Please note that if you're using an application that includes ASIO support (e.g. Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Cubase, Studio One, Reaper etc) then all input and output channels will be available to you by default, this article may not be applicable. If you're having problems installing the driver on Windows 7, please try the steps in the following article: Focusrite USB Driver will not install on my Windows 7 machine (digital signature problem).

If you set your buffer size in milliseconds and not samples, then you are controlling the overall latency in time, The buffer is adjusted for each sample rate so that you always get the latency that you have set in milliseconds. The time it takes for the sound of a snare drum to reach a drummer's ears, is about 2.1 milliseconds. In the window that opens, you can then select any additional channels that you wish to expose to non-ASIO applications ( in the example below we'll expose Analogue Inputs 3 + 4): The former monitors the input for 10 seconds, setting the gain accordingly, and also includes a dual channel option. The latter applies real-time changes to the gain setting to avoid clipping.

If you're sat 1m (just over an arm's length) from your speakers then the latency between the sound from your speaker and your ear is 3.4ms. THD+N < 0.01% (‘A’ weighted measured with +16dB input gain -1dBFS at output and 22Hz/22kHz bandpass filter) Due to this phantom powering, these Scarlett audio interfaces will need more than a laptop battery to power them up and keep them running throughout your recording session. For further information on using the Ableton software, please view the following tutorial videos: Ableton | Learn LiveIf you do not do this, then you may hear a 'doubling effect' or echo. This is because you hear the direct sound (before it is passed to the computer) and you hear the same audio that has been processed by the computer afterwards. The specific Input Channel will vary depending on your interface and Sample Rate. Below are the input channels for Scarlett 3rd Gen interfaces at a Sample Rate of 44.1-48kHz. For more information, see the Focusrite Control User Guide for your specific interface. This material is both lightweight and strong, allowing them to survive transport and intense studio sessions. By default, a Custom Mix is a combination of analogue inputs and DAW 1/2, mixed together. The analogue inputs represent a direct feed from the inputs.

Open the Ableton Live Lite DAW software and navigate to “Options > Preferences”. This is where we will confirm that the Ableton software is ready to communicate with the Scarlett 2nd Generation. On the left side of this tab, please select “Audio” and two tabs should populate on the right. Select “ASIO” under “Driver Type” and “Focusrite USB ASIO” under “Audio Device”. This will now populate the rest of this window, where you can select your Sample Rate and Buffer Size, which will likely default to 44.1kHz and 256 samples prospectively. If you are unsure what to set your Sample Rate and Buffer Size to, we suggest matching these default settings. Once this is set, we are now ready to test Ableton! Both versions of the Scarlet are pretty close in size. But the 2i4 is a bit bigger and heavier because it comes with more hardware. The 4th gen Scarletts include technical improvements across all interfaces with 120dB dynamic range RedNet A/D converters, a new improved headphone amp, better implementation of knob halo indicators with output metering for the 2i2 and 4i4, and a reworked Air mode. A buffer size that is set in samples equates to a certain amount of time, but that amount of time is dependent on the sample rate (the number of samples recorded per second). The higher the sample rate, the less time (milliseconds) that the buffer size equates to. Focusrite got its start in the 1980’s building consoles for recording studios. Since then, they’ve expanded in the music industry, producing audio interfaces for music producers. If you have set a buffer size of 512 samples. The amount of time (milliseconds) 512 samples equates to, depends on how long it takes for 512 samples to be processed.

If your interface uses Focusrite Control/Scarlett Mix Control, then please bear in mind that the output routing on these devices is flexible. To set up 1-to-1 routing: To reiterate, when setting your buffer size, what you are doing is giving the CPU of your computer a period of time to process audio, before it is passed to and from the interface and the recording software. The Scarlett 2i2 and 2i4 are both manufactured by Focusrite, an English company that specialize in producing top-quality audio recording equipment. Newly designed guitar input to capture crystal clear guitar tone that minimizes the risk of distortion

Part of the time this takes is the 'buffer size', which you can set yourself. You can adjust the buffer size for your needs. Using a lower buffer size (and therefore getting less latency) gives your CPU less time to process the audio and therefore the CPU must work harder to process the audio in time. Your interface is now ready to use! If you're using recording software then make sure you select the Focusrite ASIO driver in the audio settings for that software. Further new features are specific to the 2i2 and 4i4. The reworked preamps have an impressive 69dB of gain, which we found ideal for low-output mics such as ribbons. The 2i2 and 4i4 preamps also include optional auto gain and clip safe. If your mic preamp does not have a dedicated 48V button, there may be a global phantom supply switch, or phantom might be switchable in banks (say channels 1-4 and 5-8 on an eight-channel interface such as the Scarlett 18i20). When phantom power is supplied in banks, you should take care to ensure you do not connect equipment that could potentially be damaged by 48V being supplied, to an input within a bank being supplied phantom power. We measure latency in milliseconds. Depending on the interface, the buffer size is set in either samples or milliseconds.
