About this deal

Post-Punk New Wave exploded on to the charts, and The Associates, The Jam, Echo And The Bunnymen, Pretenders, and Siouxsie's side project The Creatures are all included. K. was dancing to the Brit-Funk of Linx with ‘You’re Lying’ and the relaxed Dub explorations of UB40, with two of their early 12”s included. Across 4 CDs, 45 extended, full-length or remixed versions – 44 of which appeared on 12” singles, and 1 (Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark) which although released on a 10” single, admirably fits the criteria. By the late 80s, club culture informed and popularised a huge number of new styles of dance music including House, Eurodance, Jack-Swing, Techno, and an evolution in Soul… the final disc highlights some of the best from the end of the decade. Talking of NOWs, the beach-towel-tastic NOW 15 compilation, originally issued in 1989 was also recently announced.

S. New Wave smash with ‘Whip It’, and fantastic unique hits from Scarlet Fantastic, Split Enz, Our Daughter’s Wedding, Anne Pigalle and ‘Flowers’ by Zaine Griff (featuring Kate Bush on backing vocals) are all included. Pure party fun tracks including ‘Can Can’, ‘The Birdie Song’ and ‘Star Trekkin’ lead the way to a trio of iconic 80s movie themes… ‘Ghostbusters’ from Ray Parker Jr. Moving on with a selection of songs from some of the greatest female voices of the decade – including Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton, Chaka Khan, Irene Cara and Olivia Newton-John.

Malcolm McLaren rounds off the disc with his celebration of the house-ballroom culture of New York… and two superstar collaborations, ‘Sidewalk Talk’ from Jellybean – written by and featuring vocal contributions from Madonna – and ‘Somebody’s Watching Me’ – a huge hit by Rockwell featuring guest vocals from Michael Jackson. S. with The Gap Band, Leon Haywood, Bobby Thurston, Teena Marie, Jermaine Jackson and the timeless ‘Funkin’ For Jamaica’ from Tom Browne, and the U. Disc 2 kicks off with The Communards’ chart topper ‘Don't Leave Me This Way’ before a string of massive number ones from Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Duran Duran, Soft Cell, The Human League, Culture Club and the party staple ‘Come On Eileen’ from Dexys Midnight Runners.

Post-Punk Pop exploded on the charts of the early 80s, and The Associates and The Stranglers feature, as do The Adventures ‘Broken Land’ and Marc Almond’s ‘Stories Of Johnny’ – both amazing songs. We include synth-pop from Arcadia, Howard Jones, and Peter Schilling with ‘Major Tom (Coming Home)’, which was recently rediscovered as the opening theme to ‘Deutschland 83, 86 and 89’.

The superb synth-pop of ‘Love Kills’ from Freddie Mercury opens the album, followed by the special dance mix of Eurythmics’ ‘There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)’. This compilation is available as a 4CD set (with the non-deluxe 8-panel card sleeve) and a snazzy looking triple 3LP red, white and blue coloured vinyl package. In addition to a traditional CD release, an 80-track "deluxe digital edition" was made available for download only on iTunes.

Big Audio Dynamite, Julian Cope and XTC are also included before the collection draws to a close with Latin Quarter's 'Radio Africa' - and Scritti Politti's 1981 single 'The 'Sweetest Girl''. favourites ‘Jump (For My Love)’, ‘It’s Raining Men’ and ‘Feels Like I’m In Love’ lead on to the number one version of ‘La Bamba’ from Los Lobos. My only minor niggle is that a cd that is in a cardboard sleeve maybe could do with being sent out in sturdier packaging. Culture Club had a fantastic year in 1982 with the release of their debut album ‘Kissing To Be Clever’ from which ‘I’m Afraid Of Me’ was the second single, and Bananarama enjoyed early success with their hit single ‘Shy Boy’.
