About this deal

The British Union of Fascists (BUF) was very active in Britain at the time, many Catholic intellectuals supported the pro-Catholic ‘Nationalist’ forces, and some Britons even travelled to Spain to support Franco’s forces. The small concession by the British government was to allow the placement of refugee children (known as Basque refugees, though some were from non-Basque regions) in Britain for the duration of the war. Despite volunteering to fight for a cause that he passionately believed in, it’s clear he still felt many of the normal complaints soldiers felt about war – shortages of essentials; hoping for luxuries such as chocolate; and boredom during gaps between activity, hence the eager requests for reading material. Bob Edwards was also from Liverpool, to docker parents, but is mostly known for his political career.

His attention was first attracted by on of these cards mentioning a "concentration camp", a term which, even if it doesn't means by itself extermination, was already used in nazi Germany. We pride ourselves in using the best materials we can find, which is why our t-shirts will not fall out of shape after a few washes like other cheaper varieties you may find for sale elsewhere.was ringing out across Madrid as the International Brigades marched up to the battlefront on 8th November 1936. In a very European context, fighting in Spain was about defending Britain, because these men and women truly thought that this was the only way to defend Britain (and the rest of Europe) from the danger of fascism. Whilst the political left had grown in support across Europe during the interwar years, so too had another force on the far-right: fascism.

La Pasionaria (‘The Passionflower’), Ibárruri was easily the most charismatic leader of the Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War. Previous collections privileged the writings of the International Brigades over those of the Spanish, sometimes excluding them altogether. We’re amplifying the voices, issues and ideas that are marginalised, under-represented or ignored by the mainstream. Use on personal social media accounts, provided the individuals are not promoting themselves commercially. We also use our printing expertise to put our designs onto other clothing - in fact, we can print designs on an amazing variety of things. From this we can conclude that Eddie was driving aid lorries out of Albacete, possibly into harm’s way near the front lines. But we also have smaller collections or individual items from others who volunteered to fight or supported the campaign in Spain, including Thomas Mitchell, Fred Pearson, and Steve Yates. Part of this was the drive from the Trade Union movement and the Communist Party to support Republican Spain, both of which were far more popular among the working class. Even if some may claim that the immediate success of the coalition of anti-fascists has been overstated, memories of the event – such as the retelling of stories, commemorative events, and physical memorials – carry their own importance and significance.

The BUF had developed a significant but notorious profile throughout the mid-1930s, even if it had failed to gather any electoral success. The event has developed an almost mythic status in some circles, representing the East End’s clear rejection of fascism, and is celebrated with a plaque and the mural on walls along Cable Street. CW: People went to fight, people were particularly conscious of what was involved in the fight against facism.

The blackshirts were formed up at Tower Hill and when the police were unable to clear the intended routes through the east end the fascists marched westwards to Temple. I hope you would agree that we picked our wording carefully for this post – by using the word ‘disrupted’ we did not suggest no march took place, or even that there was a direct confrontation between marchers and counter-demonstrators. He volunteered to fight in Spain in 1936, right at the start of the war, bringing quite a lot of experience from his previous two years in the Territorial Army. The final victory of the military rebellion imposed 36 years of fascist dictatorship on the country, which only ended after the death of Franco in 1975. Sometimes we discover new information that changes what we know about an object, such as who made it or used it.
