The consequences are the main thrust of the story, a light-hearted tale that's amusing, perceptive, and beautifully written in an old-fashioned sort of way. If you like "Miss Pettigrew" or gentle books about bygone times which were actually written in those times and which take their time to set up the action, then this might be for you. I read somewhere that this book was described as a "cosy" read and I think that is the perfect word to use for Miss Buncle's Book. Barbara then has the inspired notion of adding a Pied Piper figure who, midway through her book, turns the village and its inhabitants upside down. Stevenson succeeds in creating various plot lines that she intertwines with great dexterity and humour. The smashing bestseller is published under the pseudonym John Smith, which is a good thing because villagers recognize the truth. It's a really easy read (just what I needed after a cold), but it's not until you get to the end that you realise just how clever it is, like looking into a hall of mirrors, a book, within a book, within a book, and so on, until it all ties together beautifully. I smiled, I giggled, I laughed out loud, I tsk'd tsk'd at some of the characters' antics but most of all I loved the book!

Of course, she had no more idea of the snowball-effect the book would have on all their lives than the villagers themselves did. Her money is drying up—as it is for many of her neighbors—and she has written a novel to rescue herself from poverty. What happens when Barbara's friends and neighbours recognise themselves all too well and decide to try and find out who exactly the author is makes an amusing read.Als dieses auf Grund der Wirtschaftskrise wertlos wird, schreibt sie um Geld zu verdienen einen Roman. She is already living in Reduced Circumstances, with just her faithful former nanny to help her out, but when her dividends come in at a much reduced rate she needs to find another source of income. In her book, Disturber of the Peace, she changes the name of the town and people, but it's pretty transparent stuff: Silverstream becomes Copperfield, Major Waterfoot is the name given to the real Colonel Weatherhead, Dr. Das Buch hat so viel Spaß gemacht, dass ich mich im Anschluss an die Lektüre noch eine ganze Weile leichter und beschwingter gefühlt habe. Unfortunately, Miss Buncle had no imagination, so she wrote about her friends – quite kindly and truthfully, of course, for she was a benevolent and veracious soul.

saw a renewed interest in Stevenson's books with the reissue of two of her most popular novels, Mrs. What Christopher Nolan did for Inception and Satoshi Kon for Paprika is here encapsulated in a cozy little read about life in a small English town during the 30s. Well, when the hanging committee came knocking on the door, Miss Buncle was nowhere to be found and her house was on the market. Those who are kind and decent get treated well, those who are venal, unkind and obnoxious get their comeuppance in her story. When Miss Buncle's book is accepted and printed, the village of Silverstream is in an uproar over who this "John Smith" could be who knows them all so well. But I also recommend it for those who would like a change of pace, are looking for something light and amusing, or find appealing the promise of a book that has the charm of vintage photographs and the comfort of a hug.
